I was feeding my two retrievers yesterday, (Shadow & Angel), when Angel jumped up and I nearly fainted, Big open wound between her front legs/chest area. I washed it out and put antiseptic cream on it, but took her straight to the vets this morning. Cyst that had burst, Ouch!! Worringly, vet found 3 more smaller ones on her body, went to drain them, but they are solid. Biopsy taken, Friday is D-day, she's home until then on painkillers and antibiotics. They mentioned possible surgery, but it will depend on biopsy results. Should I be as worried as I am, she's 7, but in fairness to her is not off her food/water at all, so maybe a glimmer of hope. Fingers crossed for our "Angel". xx

Thanks guys, I mostly post about horses, as my dogs never give me any trouble. On a good note though, angel is inside (normally out and about), and is taking to letting me know she needs toilet already. please GOD, let her be ok, and a good kick in the bottom to me for not having pet insurance, today cost 130 euro, but that wont touch the total cost. Good job, I love my dogs, I'd go into serious debt for either of them. xxx (getting pet insurance for shadow first thing in the morning). xx

Cysts and fatty lumps are quite common, so try not to worry too much. If she does need them removed it is usually quite a straightforward op but fingers crossed it won't come to that. Let us know how she goes on.

Well, update this evening, she's still eating and drinking as well as ever, which i am taking as a good sign, and as i had to go to work today, she was inside all day, (although i work for my dad, 3 minutes away, so popped home ever hour to leave her out, and no accidents). However, when i came back for the final time this evening, she'd had a lease of life, cleaned down the kitchen worktoops for me, bless her, i just had to pick everything off the floor, :), And I stupidly left an unopened 6 pack of tins of dogfood on the counter, and she couldn;t wait any longer for supper, so chewed through the 6 tins!!! - nothing wrong with her teeth!!! lol, hope it works for the better, she is such a funny dog. xxx

Ouchies! As the others say, it is quite common, and indeed it can be hereditary.
Usually just unsightly and the main problem is the dog eating themselves out of discomfort and bursting them. They do get worse with age.
My young dog has one on his back, as did my old bitch, totally unrelated though.

Pity she isn't a boy, a friend's dog had a mahoosive one taken off, they had to go quite deep and dog now has a massive square bald patch and a big scar...I call him Well'ard now!
But hopefully Angel's will not be so severe! It was a pricey op though, as I recall :o
