Whipman Rideout had a grand day for it.

Hacking to the start with some friends. I am on the big grey ID

The ride starts with a parade (behind a pipe band) through the village

including going through the village ford which it where the majority of the locals gather to see the ride out (and in). Video link shows the whole ride going through the ford, along the main road and in to the first field

What a lovely day - the first field gallop!

Selection of photos after the first gallop

Then on to the second field where we had a good gallop round the perimeter of the field. There was some extra fun when several cows escaped from the next field and joined in. They were herded back without any incident - don't think the cows bit is on the video though.

The ride then continued for couple of hours until the lunch stop

I think the whole rideout thing looks great fun ! sadly dont do them in the midlands in the same way !
was that you coming sideways down the hill on the last video ??:D

So so jealous! Perfect weather and it's such a fabulous ride (if you can ride and you've got a sane horse). I couldn't justify the price of hiring though:( and small cob isn't fit or fast enough, big cob isn't sensible enough and lanky orange muppet is only 3. Next year though! Instead I 'rode' the Orange Idiot for the first time :D We'll be there next year!

One of the girls I ended up chatting to said it cost her £160 for her hireling for the day!

My OH and I take it in turns to take our sensible big lad although he can get strong and with his large melanoma I cannot get a normal bridle on him so means I have to keep to a snaffle with the Micklem! I haven't been brave enough (yet!) to take my IDxWB idiot and still not sure if I want to!

Yep, really not cheap! I did think about hiring but decided to spend in at the Highland Show instead! Think how much I could buy with a couple of rides hires worth!

Roo was bought to common ride eventually and does have a fab temperament so fingers crossed! I just need to find some suicidal lunatic rider to take him on the first one to see what he's like.....

I'm loving the various posts of picturs that have been put up recently of these. Love the way these traditions still continue. Is there a significance to the time of year rideouts take place?
