Today I rode herbie in the school. Someone had been over to use the school yesterday and had left a jump up so I left the wings where they were, took the cups off and put the poles on the ground as trotting poles.
I introduced Herbs to trotting poles yesterday on the lunge and to begin with he just kept trying to jump the lot bless him but he soon settled to the idea. Today ridden he was so good. He just trotted over them like a little pro. We did some flat schooling in trot and canter and I was working on getting him round the whole school. He just tends to do a large circle in the middle. I don't think he like one long side as through the trees you can see the duel carageway with all the lorrys wizzing along and I think it worries him alittle. But we did a few circets round the outside without to much trouble.
Then I had one of those moment of madness (I've been having alot of them lately) I got off him and put up a Jump :eek::eek: Now he's only ever jumped on the lunge, never with a person on. I trotted him twords the jump and he went over it. :D He even had a big smile on his face. We jumped it afew times on each rein. Here are the videos. Don't laugh at how tiny the jump is. Not only is it his first time jumping I am normaly terrified of jumping.

I'm so proud of him and also of myself for doing it. I didn't even feel scared. The only pony I've ever felt safe on jumping was Lucy any other pony I would refuse to jump even this small. I think it is safe to say he enjoys his jumping so I think I may need to find some bravery from somewhere.

Thanks for looking. :D

That's amazing, I'm so pleased for you and him and that it's all coming together. He looks such a genuine pony and that he's enjoying leaving the ground! I'm sure he gets a lot of his confidence from you - you've obviously got a great relationship forming with him as you had with Lucy :)

Thanks everyone.

MochaDun we are starting to form a relationship. He is starting to trust me more and more and he actualy wants to be with me. He follows me round when I poo pick his field now. :D

It is incredible how quickly you are turning Herbie around, he sounds like a little star now, I'm so pleased for you. I wonder if I am the only one who wonders if Lucy is somehow giving him instructions to behave himself? I can just imagine her saying to him 'Now you must look after our Mum'

Every thread you post about Herbie makes me smile, and watching you both canter over that jump actually made me well up a teeny bit... you have brought him such a long way!:)

I really admire you Laura - you persevere and the results are obvious! Woohoo for you hun!! It's nice to hear positive posts from you again, as you were worringly down for a while (understandable, of course).

Hows job-hunting going?:D

Thanks everyone.

appylass what a lovely thought, Bought a tear to my eye. Strangely though I still feel Lucy here sometimes. The other week when Herbs had a small nap at the wild ponies in the forest I thought he was going to be awful. Without thinking I said "Lucy help me please" Just as I said it Herbs calmed down, turned the way I wanted him to face and walked on like a good boy. God it sounds like madness when you say it out loud but it did make me wonder. :o

Maletto I didn't think he would improve this quickly but he just seems to have calmed down suddenly. You still have to be careful of him though. there is a bit on one of the vids where we are off camera but you here me saying "no" to him. That is because he was napping to the gate.

Ahhhh thanks Spudlet.

thankyou AprilBlossom I realy don't know how I would be coping if it wasn't for you guys and Herbs ofcourse. The past year has been so hard and i still find it hard to except Lucy is gone. It still hurts so very much. It's good that I can come on here and type out storys from our time together and I know people actualy want to read them. I have so many i'll probably be typing them out for years (unless everyone gets fedup of them ofcourse :p) Herbs gives me something to focas on and I am sort of helping him in Lucys honer if that makes sence. Not much joy on the job front yet :( Something could be in the pipeline but not to shore. I've put an ad up to try to get some freelancing work but had no response as yet :( But don't tell the OH but me not having work gives me more time to play with Herbs :D:D

brilliant well done!!!

im planning to do that with my mare - shes jumped twice now on the lunge but shes so chilled i just want to get on her and take her over a tiny cross as i know she wont do anything :D lol!

but apparantly you have to canter first :(

Well done!!! He looks super cool and happy jumping! You'll have a little jumping machine on your hands before you know it!

BTW when F was younger, any time he was worried in the arena, e.g. windy day, I would throw around a few poles and go over them, circle round them, etc. and that would calm him down a lot. I think it gave him something to concentrate on other than the scary thing, so maybe Herbie feels the same?

thanks shysmum. Horrid Herbie won. :o

thankyou apercrumbie, Moggyinmanolos and pippipony.

thankyou MrsM :o I am terrified of jumping. Even that tiny jump was a big deal for me :o Hopfuly I'll trust him like I trusted Lucy. :)
