Whats the best way to go about getting one?
I love the breed and have done alot of research about them.
I know there are good studs in England but have heard conflicting things about going to spain to purchase one and importing.
So for all you lot that have one how did you go about it?

As far as I am aware Andalusian is not a breed (certainly not recognised by the Spanish Stud Book) it just means a typical Spanish horse - a PRE can be Andalusian but an Andalusian isn't necessarily a PRE.

Have you seen this site - very useful. It talks about paperwork in Andalucia, which I can assure you is similar but cunningly different in other autonomous Spanish communities.

Basically any horse you buy should have a carta - breed papers registered with Spanish Studbook. It quite clearly says what it is and you should not hand over any money unless you actually have it in your hand - demand copies of it.

If you find a reputable breeder in Spain to buy from transporting any horse to the UK can be done by an international transporter. You need to look for a Yeguada (the Yeguada Militar is the most famous) if you want to buy from a stud. If you know your bloodlines you should be able to find who is breeding with them. The SSB site is actually interactive and you can track down particular stallions offspring etc.

Personally, I don't like PREs I think they are odd looking horses but the world would be a boring place if we all liked the same things!

You could also consider Lusitano's. I've got a half breed and they truly are a fabulous breed. I think all Iberians are generally very willing natured.

Id like to buy a pure bred some day, but I'd probably go to Spain / Portugal to get one as they are way overpriced here still!

ChicoMio- Thankyou very much for that info it has been really helpful, I think it would work out cheaper to go to spain but to go with eyes wide open!

Nailed- I would be very greatfull if you could give me details of the stud, I dont know much about lusitano's but am told they are very simular so would love to find out more

M_M- I agree they are extremmely overpriced over here and I do have a limited budget, it seems becuase they are called an andalusian they add on the ££££'s!
I am really considering going to spain and doing alot of resaerch beforehand to know exactly who to trust and what to look for x

Yes research is vital - there is so much to look in to when importing horses. Including paperwork, health checks, reputible dealers etc.

Good luck with your mission....

That was an interesting link. I had been told that the stud books for PRE and Lusitano had been merged but from your link this appears not to be the case.

I have both british and spanish bred andalusians (PREs), there are lots and lots of studs in the UK and if you get in touch with BAPSH they will point you in the right direction.

I love my spanish bred mare, but bought her unbacked and if you do buy from Spain I would advise to buy unbacked as the spanish (although they are improving!) do not train the basics. Also you do have to be very very careful that you don't pay for a PRE and end up with an Andalusian, as someone has already said, an Andalusian is not necessarily a PRE, an Andalusian is anything born in Andalusia and lots of people get caught. Unless you are prepared to actually go to Spain, preferably with someone who knows the stud owners, buy british.

SirenaXVI- Thankyou so much for your help, theres alot of helpfull info there, I would prefer to buy unbacked either way just because i know how much they are pushed at a young age (more so in spain?). If i did buy from spain i would definatly be going over there.
Also pretty please can i see some pics of your mare? Its very rare you see ridden ones! I would love a stallion, and although my yard owner would accomodate one it just wouldnt be a great quality of life, so would have to get either a gelding or mare, just think that being an entire mare would give it a bit more 'spark' if that makes sense rather than a gelding x

Glad I could help! Any excuse to post some photos!

This is my british bred mare at the Regionals this year, I bought her as a nine month old and she is now 11

This is my spanish mare, sadly no photots ridden as I have only just rebacked her after having a foal last year so piccies also show her foal. I must get some ridden ones of her done, she is going really well under saddle. Lluna is 16.2 and as you can see she is a different type to Sirena who is only 15.1, this is not because she is spanish bred, just because she is what they call a 'modern' PRE, bigger and bred specifically for dressage. I like the more traditional type personally but something about this mare called to me!

You are kind of right, but only the North American studbooks have merged.

How does your mare do in BD? This is the route i would love to go down but have been told they are only just starting to accept the way they move as 'Correct' and starting to recognise their movement/action.
Again thanks for your help x

TBH I have not had a problem with BD, both mares move fairly straight, Sirena has been competing since she was 4, she was 4th at the Regionals this year (elementary) and is working medium/ ad med at home, due to an injury earlier on this year I have not had her out recently, but according to my trainer (a list 1 judge) she should be out doing medium now.

Lluna has not been out yet (steering in canter still a little suspect!), but my trainer thinks she should do really well, she offers medium trot for fun and has huuuge paces, like Sirena she has a fab brain too and after being a little tense to begin with, she is really finding her confidence now and enjoying her work.

I still have her foal, a filly called Lucera who is now a yearling, not going to be as big as mum (prob reach 15.2ish) but really typy and very beautiful. I have thought about selling her as realistically, I already have two to ride and sadly have to work too, but I also think I might want to do more serious breeding as I have access to some lovely stallions - decisions decisions!

Over the years we have answered hundreds of questions about our national horse. We talk from the place of being lovers and breeders of PREs, constantly immersed in the world of horses in Spain.

There are many articles about PREs (and the distinction of andalusian horses) on our sites. Providing resources and information is a major part of what we do.

Please feel free to contact us with any queries - we speak english.

The answers we give are more than mere textbook - they are the heart of a passion, coloured with personal experience and direct contact with the PRE breeders, trainers and owners of Spain.

We ourselves have at any time about half a dozen horses for sale, and carry a few for friends and fellow breeders at no commission. We undertake serious searches, and represent certain spanish horses in Private Treaties.

Never a great amount, and never horses that are carried on dealer sites. We know every horse and trainer you meet on these pages.

In comparison, there are nearly two hundred pages devoted to articles, stories, art, answers and info about andalusian and spanish horses on our sites.

We have a philosophy based on sowing. And a vision for a project.
