I'm so chuffed with my lovely boy.

This was taken before he went on loan at his ideal weight:

This was taken last saturday after we picked him up from his loan home (not happy  )

We still have a bit more to put on but the difference in a week is amazing! I'm so chuffed with him and he's settled where he is beautifully. I'm considering taking him on a quiet hack soon to keep him ticking as he's looking so much better.

Just need to get that muscle back and he'll look brill :)

Wow what an improvement. I must have missed the story but why on earth did they let him get to that stage??

That must have been heart breaking for you :(

He's looking much better now, what a shame after you got him up to a brilliant weight from what he was when you bought him. Hope to see you out and about with him again soon :)

They worked him 6 days a week (fair enouh he's up to that) but didn't bother feeding him despite the fact we paid for and bought them his feed. He wasn't on brilliant pasture but I thought he'd cope with that seeing as it was the summer and they said they'd top it up with hay but didn't bother. They even took him to a 3de in that state 2 weeks ago without my permission

It is so heartbreaking, I'm more angry at myself for letting it happen though, although I will never let it happen again.

The lump is gone, not sure what it was but getting physio out soon to check everything is okay before I get back on. Can't wait to get back on him I really miss riding him :)

Oh thats just awful! Really puts you off loaning them out... Was considering loaning mine out a few years ago, but its just awful the standard of people that came to try him out! There obviously must be some wonderful loaners out there but I suppose for some - as ultimately the horse isn't theirs - its easy to skimp on feeding them and looking after them as they may do their own!
Glad he's getting back on track.

Risky business loaning, even to friends, truth is I won't do it.
I loaned some out one time, after a couple of weeks I got them back, I couldn't rest, they were fine, just couldn't stop thinking about them.

No idea of the story behind the loan problems, but he clearly looks good from being home:)

Sure you will have him back to A1 condition in no time!!

God that is so awful :( I can't believe they took him out like that. I am very pleased for you and him that you have him back now. And don't be angry with yourself, it is not your fault at all, you trusted people to do right by him. At least now he is safe and happy and I am sure it's a distant memory for him.

Omg thats terrible! He went out competing like that!!!!! I'm surprised the poor boy made it round the course! Im also surprised no one at the comp said anything!

He looks like hes getting plenty of tlc from his mummy.

This x 100. He looked a disgrace when you retrieved him IMO. Well done you for getting him home, the fact he looks so much better after 1 week of basic feeding shows there was no excuse for him being like that in the first place.

Good on you.

That's a fantastic improvement in a week, and I'm sure that he's much happier to be home as well. I'm sorry and surprised they let him get into that state though, I've read a few of your posts before and you seemed pleased with the girl you loaned him out to. How ungrateful of her. Good luck with him and enjoy your first hack out!

Wow I must have missed this... how on earth can someone who is looking after someone elses horse not care for it properly, its not all about the riding :( people like this make it so difficult for those good ones out there wanting a loan horse.

I am so glad to hear you have him back home, my god after all the hard work you put into him when you got him, I do hope you have a fab ride when you do get back on.

Please keep us updated, as I think you have done such a fantastic job on getting him up to his ideal weight from when you got him.

This was me 6 months ago and still to this day do i feel guilty and regret ever putting my boy out on loan. By no means did he come back in the poor state that your boy did but he had lost a lot of muscle, his coat was dull and flakey and worst of all he was depressed you could see it in him that he was unhappy and i still remember that look!

I will never put any of mine out on loan again but as someone mentioned it is a shame on those who would give a great loan home as the reason i got my boy whom I have now owned for 8 years was through loan. I do often wonder what goes through peoples heads as the family that took my boy were right at the time however it did not end that way.

Bloody hell! (Am I allowed to say that?). Awful people to do this to both of you. I had my girl on loan for a year before buying and I still keep in touch with her previous owner, so it's a shame that people like this give loaners a bad name.

Well done for getting him back and his rapid improvement. Along with mturnbull had a very similar experience when putting our rather sensitive boy out on loan. Overcompeted but not fit, underfed, apparently there was plenty of grass in a snowy winter for a competition animal living out, sore back, I was worried about what I was being told all along, in the end gave up and went and fetched him. He will be staying home from now on.

Oh my word, poor Andy, I am so sorry this has happened to you. I remember how hard you had to work to get him up to weight when you got him so for someone to neglect him and let him slide backwards is appalling. Thank God he is back with you before he got any worse and well done for making a difference so quickly.

I just despair of how low some people will sink and this is the reason I will never loan one out, sad really because loads of potentially excellent loaners will miss out because owners are put off by this sort of story.

Blimey, he does look quite poor, like he was when you first got him though so I'm sure he'll build up again quick enough :) Have you been to Italy?
