I have a pony who is anemic,Been tested for parasites and has none ,Iv been told copper could help as well as tonic from vet,Theirs slight kidney damage but iv been told by the vet this will right itself ,Has anyone been in the same situation ? This pony was rescued and iv been told its common for them to have damage due to poor diet and neglect.

My friend's horse was diagnosed as anaemic, and we were advised to give him Red Cell as a supplement...

My horse is anemic, though thats just the way he always has been (was born like it), The best thing i can suggest is a vitamin and mineral supplement with Iron, i use red cell, which is what i have to feed everyday regardless, but propell plus (equine america) or blood liquid (NAF) will help you too.

We used to event a few years ago, and we thought that he wouldn't need the iron supplement anymore for some reason, but stupid idea,

because with all the excitment of competitions he became really poorly and kept collapsing at home and wouldn't eat or drink, i was petfrified that i was going to lose him the vet was with us constantly and he was confused too, until it twigged with us why!!

(doh!) he went straight back on it and touch wood we have never had anymore problems! We also had a pony a few miles down the road from us who was also anemic (according to another vet) who had exactly the same symptoms (fainting etc) but he had to be retired. My horse still goes out and competes and is as fit as, you wouldn't know that there is anything wrong with him, but be careful when you first start feeding the iron supplements because you may find your pony doing backflips and cartwheels around your field to begin with.

Sorry this was long winded, hope it helps x

Pickle is anemic, as said above an iron supplement always sorts him out, we normally give him equisup, red cell or blood liquid. I know it definetly works as have a before and after iron supplement blood test, which shows a change

Pickle is on working livery at a riding school and is jumped every week, he has never had a problem since getting problems sorted

I know someone with an anaemic horse, she adds a supplement high in iron to its daily feed. She uses something in a big fat bottle (think the bottles very dark red?!) - cant remember what the hell its called now, its got all usual vits & mins, B vits and iron. Oh wait, maybe its Red Cell?!

Thank-you for all your advice ,Im sure her boyfriend would love to see more of her Bex ,He's a good nurse !
