Hi all,I have a friend on who has just uncovered a serious case of animal cruelty on her yard today!

The poor pony in question is so thin and weak clearly she is clearly under fed and malnourished no one had a clue because the girl who was loaning her wouldn't let anyone go near her, and she was always rugged, there are other horses belonging to different people which are kept in individual Fields away from each other.
Luckily my friend went over and assessed the situation and the pony has been saved, god knows what would've happened if she had been left much longer....
Worse thing is she apparently had someone riding her last week!! The poor ponies spin is sticking out in wouldn't even put a saddle anywhere near her! :mad: my friend heard about this and this is what prompted her to help, people were horrified apparently and rightly so!
Like I said the poor pony is so thin and has such a sunken rump I've never seen anything like this! :mad: how could people do this to a poor pony? :(:confused:

I know of the girl who was loaning her and hope she gets some kind of punishment for this cruel act, she was on loan so if she couldn't cope why did she not ring the owner? :confused: not that this makes it right!

I will never understand how some people could do this to animals, the pony has been returned to her owner today who will be nursing her back to health, thank goodness!

This sounds really sad and awful. What is more amazing is that it has gone on under the nose of others on the yard and not been seen or suspected. I hope the horse goes back to its real owner and is properly taken care of. Why didn't the owner visit and check the horse?

I'm not quiet sure the ins and outs of it, or what the loan agreement was. But I can completely see your point that the owner could of visited. The pony has gone back to the real owner, she got the phone call today from my friend and came and collected her straight away. Poor little pony though, she's safe now but it's so sad and cruel. The girl is question has had horses before and from what I know has never done this to one of her previous ones, so why she did this is beyond me?! :mad:
 
Delicious D - unfortunately the way this yard works is that its DIY grass livery, I think from what she said its a farmer who owns the fields, so he just takes the money and has nothing to do with the horses... :mad:
Although as a yard owner weather it is DIY or not you should have some duty of care, it's just been a big failing on all sides. I'm just pleased my friend got to her before it was too late :(
 
A few years ago the daughter of the YO was out riding and spotted a pony in a right state which she recognised as having been her own when she was a child. I think they had loaned the pony when it was outgrown. Anyway, the pony was removed by the YO that day and brought home. She was like a hatrack and they had clearly been riding her in that state as she had fresh saddle sores. Poor little soul was well into her 20s. Glad to say she recovered well and my old mare who couldn't resist anything young, old or small added her to the herd of adopted and needy, and made sure no-one bullied her. She stayed with the YO until she died.
 
YO is at fault along with the owner of the pony for not doing regular checks. Pony could have been prevented from getting into such a state with proper checks.

I think an awful lot of people will have come unstuck this winter with ponies that are normally ok to live out all winter with little extra. The grazing situation is dire in many cases and in some areas people have struggled to find reasonably priced forage.

It could be reluctance to foot a forage bill, ignorance, sheer stubboness, reluctance to ask for help or just willful neglect but whatever way its sad to hear about

It just goes to show that owners shouldnt take their eye off the ball though

Yeah it was awful, we just can't understand why if she was struggling why she did not rung the owner of the pony she was loaning her off :confused:
I know exactly what you mean though I think alot of people have struggled this winter with the lack of grazing, increasing feed prices etc.
you hit the nail on the head though, you shouldn't take your eye of your horse and I think your right welsh D that it was reluctance with the food bill and ignorance which makes me so angry as I'm sure it does for many! :mad:
