Has anyone used these? Thinking of changing my horse over to either these or Pet Plan but can't decide. Know a couple of people who are happy with Pet Plan but Animal Friends are cheaper :)

Oh that's a shame to hear someone is having trouble with them; as I can't rate them highly enough.

They paid out over 2k for my poor cat when he was diagnosed with cancer following on from a calicivirus episode. It did take a bit of explanation due the initial claim forms having two conditions down, and then one, but once a lengthy written explanation was given to help them understand the complications, they were great. His treatment went on for almost a year and involved numerous claims, including several emergency out of hours visits. When I did PTS I received a lovely letter from them as well, which was a nice touch.

My main reason for choosing them was that they donated the majority, if not all, of their profits to animal charities - including small ones.

Yeh that is true, but 2 other people have commented on that thread slightly negatively about Animal Friends. Worth doing some research I would think, which of course is what you are doing OP. :o

Nothing but praise for Animal Friends from me, they recently paid out an £800 claim for the dodgy-bladdered dog, we'd only had him a couple of months so they could have tried to contest it as a prior condition if they were feeling particularly arsey about it. Easy to deal with, vet seemed happy with them (though mentioned that their £1.70 a month most basic policy was useless, only covered something like £300 vets fees!).

It's E&L , don't touch with a barge pole....!

Where do you see this? Just asking as, as far as I am aware, and according to the legal blurb on their website, it's underwritten by Red Sands (domiciled and regulated in Gibralter) and is owned by Hollard, a SA company. Both are completely separate entities and completely unrelated to E&L who I believe are a UK company.

Thanks everyone, will be ringing them tomorrow to double check a couple of things on the quote I didn't quite understand :o Why can't horse insurance be nice and straightforward?

When I tried to claim for my dog they wouldn't pay up because I hadn't claimed within 2 months of the first treatment. I hadn't because at the time it just seemed like a one off injury, the cost of which didn't come near the excess, but it turned out to be the start of arthritis. I was particularly annoyed because I'd had lifetime cover which should have covered the cost of treatment.

I think with all insurances you have to read the small print very carefully and remember they will check every claim with your vet so if there is any small chance that they can wriggle out of paying they will. Needless to say I don't bother with insurance any more - much better IMO to put the money away so its there to pay the vet bills.

I asked them about E&L when I put Teal and Samba (only the vet fees one) They started off that way but left the company so to speak about 5 years ago.

Some people on here told me they were linked to E&L so I stayed clear but I have a friend who had issues trying to get them to pay out a claim , so although there quote for me was only £600 for year compared to the £1100 I pay I never went with them as no point if they don't settle claims.

They used to be E&L. They're not any more. You should find them easy to talk to and understanding, as one of their recruitment points is that you have to be "an animal person" to work there. I found them very friendly and helpful.

im with them but 'touch wood':) haven't had to make any claims yet.i found the staff friendly enough when i was setting it up

I took out a policy with them in haste really but having done some
' googling' on them the feedback time and time again was they didn't pay out for various reasons.

I have to agree they were very friendly on the phone but on one occasion I couldn't get through on the phone for 2 days. Now when you have to report the death of your dog thats not good enough at such a distressing time.

Ultimately I cancelled as I didn't want the risk. All companies will have instances where someone is upset a claim is not paid but some of the examples were worrying.

When I called to talk about my horses colic, I was in a massive panic. The lady I spoke to hadn't dealt with horse claims before so put me through to her horse owning friend who was really lovely about processing the claim and gave me loads of advice. I'm really happy with them :)
