Now I haven't had TV in ages (internet geek) and now actually have cable TV so have turned back to my addiction to Animal Planet. I was completely shocked the other day when watching Dogs 101 and it was on 'designer breeders'. They actually went through about 4 or 5 cross-breeders indicating temperament, type, coat etc etc as though they were standard facts. They also stated how many of each 'breed' had been registered (which REALLY confused me, but it is based in America so maybe you can register cross-breeds somehow there). I spent the entire show yelling at the TV (much to the amusement of OH) yet incapable of turning it off!

Now I know that people are going for the 'designer breeds' but surely a channel such as this shouldn't be encouraging supporting this kind of breeding! And some things stated just seemed to be pure lies!

Not really sure where I'm going with this post, just felt like having a rant as it pi$$ed me off so much!!!

Rant away! What gets me is when people state that these designer crosses are so much healthier than their pure bred ancestors, not sure how they work that out, particularly when they cross 2 breeds with same problems.:( As to registering, don't know about USA but over here there are registration bodies other than KC that don't seem too bothered what they register, be it puppy farm stock or designer crosses.

There've been some odd programs on Animal Planet of late - the one entitled 'Bad Dog' or somesuch was bloody horrible, it was just a celebration of really disturbing anxious behaviours, like the dog that slammed its head repeatedly against its crate in order to shuffle it along the floor to reach some carpet to rip up in a frenzy. That one didn't win the title of Bad Dog, incidentally.

I don't think I've seen the Dogs 101 you've mentioned but the one they featured huskies in wasn't great, they mentioned problems with hip dysplasia twice as something to watch out for (really not an issue in huskies) but omitted that from breeds which do commonly suffer from it.

To be fair, they did mentioned that as a cross it could be prone to genetic diseases from either parent breed. But they were going on about Cavachons (CKC x Bichon Friese) as non-shedding etc!
