Hi all,
Bit of an odd one this but would value your opinions.
Sec A has a bruised sole, near fore, clearly visible as red area around toe, seen by vet and farrier, all things done that can be and cold Animalintex applied with plastic bag over, then a sock then vetwrap....pony out in the field 24/7 and walking easier.
Here is the wierd thing.
On removal of the poultice today....the toe area of the poultice was white...but where the poultice had gone down the clefts either side of the frogs....thick, black, very smelly pus.
So....can Animalintex cause this or do you think we are looking at an abcess as well?
Many thanks
regards

Are you sure it's pus rather than just gunge from down the clefts? I usually find poultices look like that if the foot hasn't been scrubbed clean before you put it on; the damp and heat of the poultice draw all the muck that's been accumulated down the clefts. Give the foot a darn good scrub next time before you put a poultice on, it won't be so bad. If nothing's come out on poultice don't be surprised if it travels up and comes out the coronet.

Thanks for this Maesfen...
Yes it is definitely pus.....you know the smell when you can't even go near the stable smell!
Foot defo clean....and on appliying a little pressure to the frog....more oozes out the side!
Just thinking I may be dealing with two issues...and I have to say am tempted to poultice the other foot to see if that comes off clean!
Of course...it may well be 'dead blood' coming out from the bruise at the front...
Best wishes and thanks again...

In that case I'd poultice again (after you've cleaned it off!) because it's possible the original point has run under the sole and coming out where there's least resistance - or the front mark was just a blind and the clefts have been the problem all along.

exactly this happened to our 2yo in January. Went footie - bruised sole. Then suddenly hopping lame. Vet said abscess at toe (where the bruise was) but the pus came out of the frog when poulticed. I had not dealt with abscess before and was surprised at it coming out of the frog but vet said it was just finding the easiest route out. He was sound again within days.

Thanks Misst....I think my pone has the same!!
He is feeling a lot better, but I will keep poulticing 'till the pus is out! Sneaky eh!
Best wishes
