Ankle/foot pain when riding?

In the last year my ankle area has suddenly started aching so much when I ride, and I often have to take it out the stirrup and stretch my foot out! I don't really understand where this has come from as it never used to do it and I've been riding for 10years... I don't think its every single time either, I haven't noticed it out hacking yet.

Anyone got any ideas? Its always my left foot. I've heard you can have a 'collapsed hip' when riding before but would I suddenly pick this up after years? and are there any tell-tale signs of one, and how can you fix it!! I'm just fed up of feeling uncomfortable when I'm trying to ride.

thanks :)

Hi, it could well be coming from an imbalance elsewhere, you may be tight in the hip and that could be putting pressure down a certain part of your foot. I would go see a physio/chiro (ideally one who understands riding) and get a check up. You may also find Sprenger stirrups to be a big help, I love mine! Good luck :)

HI
I used to suffer with the same pain but i do my hip exercises now before riding and do not ride with short stirrups and that solved it for me. It was all due to me being tight in the hip.
Hope this helps

relax. ride without stirrups for a bit, then lengthen your stirrups as someone suggested.
