Well it is annoying for me, but a good rule in general i think...

They have now said that for any 80cm/90cm/1m opens or any amateur qualifiers, you will only get £1 notional if you win.

Annoying for me because had this rule been in place whilst i had first joined with Tara i would proberbly still be in british novice, and therefore get my 4 double clears and do the second rounds, and i could also get my discovery 4 double clears. As it is, i won too much in the opens that i didn't have a chance to get my double clears, even though she went clear she was just too damn fast!

You have to plan exactly what you are going to enter so that you can get your double clears in before being out of the class. At the lower end of BSJA the Opens have little value to you, as you have found, all that happens is you can increase the amount of money on your card which puts you out of the class early before you can get your double clears in.

My daughter has consentrated on getting her double clears & steered clear of the opens for the moment. She has managed to get her 4 DC in BN & has 3 DC in Disco & a DC in Newcomers & moneywise is still well in the BN money range. It is important to really consider what each entry will achieve & how it could effect you & with forward planning hopefully you can achieve your goals.

I have over the years learnt though that getting your 4 DCs really isn't worth it. Especially since they changed the qualifying numbers in the regionals 2 years ago. You now have to win it, or if there are enough entered you might get lucky and 2nd will qualify as well.

For BN this means you have to be happy turning 2 strides into a 1.25 spread - mere mortals don't do that. The Newcomers 2nd round starts at 1.25, so by the 3rd round you are jumping 1.40.

2 years ago our horse came 3rd in the BN and 4th in the Discovery regionals and didn't qualify for anything.

I have decided that I would much rather just go to a show and have fun on the day.

i have been really careful with my novice too.
he has £35 on his card and has managed to jump 3dc bn and 2 disco in 2 months.
he very rarely has a fence so i have been going all the long routes to not win money!
this works until you jump the only double clear of course like wednesday where i won the disco and got £20 notional put on his card!!!

I'm with DiesalDog. Yes, its great if I get my double clears as I guess its good for the horses CV but I never intend to do the 2nd rounds as they're always too far from me.

I was out of BN too quick, got my Disc DC's, out of Newcomers too quick and now Ive just started Foxhunters and again, am going to be out of that in about £60! I don't really care anymore, I just ride and enjoy it.

Someone I was talking to at Merrist Wood yesterday said that this new rule only applies at intro shows (the ones that start at 70cm) and not at progressive shows. He apparently found this out to his cost as he's now trying to get his remaining two double clears on a horse that only have £12 left in BN as he'd happily been jumping the amateur classes assuming that he was only winning £1 notional. He seemed to know what he was talking about so anyone wanting to do second rounds (I'm with the others too big and scary!) should be careful.
