My mare had her annuwal vaccinations on friday and when i took her in on saturday there was a lump on her neck which i think could have been from the injection, but it could also be a bite..
she hasn't had a reaction like this before so i'm not sure what to think...any ideas?

My horse reacted to her second initial flu/tet vaccination. She was off-colour for a few days and now has a lump on her neck. Vet who did her first booster last month said it was too high up the neck to have been the vaccination but it definately was as I saw it. I'm rubbing witch hazel and arnica gel into it to try to get it to go, but no luck so far.

I'd ask your vet if there's anything you can do to get rid of it.

Thing is-She seems pretty un-phased by it...pretty normal...i shall give a check on it today and if it's still there will get the vet to have a look at it and let you know what he says. Praying it won't mean she has to get the thing done again-she's phobic of needles..

I have had 2 horses react to their flu and tet vaccinations, the first is a mare she gets swellings in her armpits everytime she is jabbed and doesn't matter which brand (Duvaxyn or Prevac), she is now jabbed in her bottom and starts a short course of bute the morning the vet is coming and so far (touch wood) this has controlled the reaction. The other was in my gelding, he had been vaccinated when younger and had his jabs kept upto date for years then one year he had a reaction he got a huge abcess at the site of the injection and required vet treatment, i had to clean the abcess daily and he was on finadyne, one morning it popped out and the abcess was hanging by some skin, he went absolutely berserk and was cantering round his box (17h ID in 11x11 stable - not easy to canter round it but he was!) the vet had to come out and sedate him and remove the abcess by cutting it away from the skin it was still hanging on, the hole the abcess left behind was huge (and pussy) you could easily fit your fist in it, but we flushed it out a few times everyday and it healed beautifully you can't see the scar unless you know where to look but you can feel it because the skin is thickened there, because he had had a true reaction to the jab the vet contacted the manufacturer of the drug and they paid all his vet bills! He now also has his jab in his bottom just incase because its better to have an abcess up on the rump than in the neck or brisket!

Not sure if you asking me but in my case the mare has 3 days bute no biggy and (fingesr x) has been fine ever since we have been putting it in her arse and giving bute and the gelding has never reacted again but to be safe still put it in his arse too! If you weren't asking me - oooopps SORRY!

my horse had reaction years ago and ended up with abcesses. when they burst (looked like pizza topping) more kept appearing. Ended up going to Potters Bar Equine Hospital and costed about £4000. The vet contacted the drug company and they paid for it all. But he was left with a huge dent (the size of a football) in the side of his neck............

D - I will suggest that if a problem arises again thanks Dougie

S - Sounds like my experience but I was lucky I got away with just the one (supersized) abcess! My vet before we moved use to jab in the brisket, he always said it was a better place in the unlikely event of a reaction, my new vet does it in the neck and I alway wince thinking I hope that doesn't react! Except the 2 that have reacted they get done in the bottie!
