My horse has a sibling that's a very similar color, and the breeder called him buckskin. Since she does paperwork, testing, and registering, I'm assuming that she's right in respect to that horse. In that case the father was grey (but carries a dilute gene of sorts - PRE Paco Marti bloodlines) and the mother...I can't recall.

So maybe buckskin?

Smokey blacks are supposed to be phenotypically identical to black horses. Is there nd1 in Connemaras?

Haha sorry, was busy playing ponies and trying to cat proof a stable ready to adopt some ferals having lost my gorgeous yard cat a couple of weeks ago.

I call him brown or chocolate colour but I would have bet my front teeth that he is a very dark buckskin, I was so sure, he has amber golden eyes, a lot of tan round eyes and muzzle in summer and a gorgeous brass/copper shine.

But he is EEaa. So those who said black guessed it! Genetically he is a black horse. I’m still waiting for the cream and dun results (to see if he has the nd1 gene). Apparently a single copy of cream has no effect on black hair, so if he is a smokey black that shouldn’t affect how he presents, but perhaps the nd1 would?

So interesting as he is completely different to BBP who is much more black but closer to a 70% dark chocolate colour and who has red highlights instead of orange/copper ones. Still waiting for BBPs official results but I’m betting EEaa nd1 for him.

Apparently I have a thing for black horses with minimal markings. This one has about 5 white hairs on his forehead and that’s it.

He’s a smashing pony. Every time I see posts about horse buying and selling I think how lucky I was. To buy his equivalent now he is 3 would cost a fortune I’m sure. Spotted his advert on Facebook, bought unseen and shipped from Ireland completely unhandled other than being gelded and brought in for sale, he had never been led, never had his feet trimmed or been wormed but took it all in his stride. Other than jumping and climbing over 1.2m fences he really hasn’t put a foot out of line. He is curious, independent, brave but super sensitive, jumps for fun (water troughs and fencing as well as the bank and steps in his field). And he has bounced back from his ruptured tendon so well. He’s just such a nice guy.

ND1 can definitely do slightly odd things, and might be the cause of him looking buckskin. I was another one who would have bet money on buckskin and sooty.

I thought that they could be identical but, depending on how much the cream is expressed, they could also be browner and with lighter eyes.
