Hi all,
Sorry im back again! Basically my horse is currently on 1 bute/day to keep him comfy. He happily plods around his field and doesnt look to be in any pain as such-he always has ears pricked. The field he is in has 2 steep banks which he goes up toe first slowly but he has struggled with banks thats how we had his DJD diagnosed. The field has limited amount of flat areas it is gently sloped even on the paths.
When he turns he is quite stiff and very choppy (especially if he been standing a while) he loosens up when walking but still short artritic gait.
Basically I want a supplement that will help his stiffness as I dont want to put him on 2 butes/day as i dont think it is pain that is the problem..just stiffness.

Thanks in advance and here is my offering...
freshly baked muffins and hotchocolate for all who read!

Our field is on a hill too and both occupants have arthritis. My friends mare struggles coming down the hill so much that we got the farrier out thinking she had laminitis with the way she was walking. She's getting the vet next week to start on bute.
My mare has arthritis in both back legs and out hacking struggles coming down hill and is a bit shuffly.
Anyway I've got her on devils claw and I've just switched from NAF superflex to Cortaflex HA and it seems to of helped keep her more mobile.
My friends horse is older and much bigger and heavier and unfortunately supplements alone have not helped her.

I use the Newmafket joint supplement for the old lad i have here, it seems to help him a lot and he is much freer than when he started on it. I also have the physio to him when he is looking "bad" to give him acupuncture.

tumeric - sounds bunny hugger ish - but have quite a lot of anecdotal evidence that it seems to help with stiffness - certainly seems to have helped with my 21 yr old arthritic mare:)
& its very cheap - can do no harm & makes their noses goes bright yellow at feed time
