How do you teach a horse to do flying changes? What are the aids? How would you go about it? Out of curiosity really, I haven't ridden a horse that can do them before, and think they would be very useful for SJ when Flash is ready. I'd obviously get some help as both of us not really knowing would be a recipe for disaster!

This is not the 'correct' dressage way, but you can teach SJers to do them by cantering over a pole at an angle and asking for the change of aid over the pole. When you ask, you should move your new outside leg back and push out with the new inside leg. Slowly, they should learn these as the aids.

You need to put the pole across the BE line of the arena. Cantering on the left leg on the outside track, go across the diagonal after the short side and then ask as you go over the pole.

Hope this makes sense - I would get a pro to explain / teach you properly!

Thanks, I thought that was how you went about it

My horse is out of action for a few months anyway, so might see if I can find someone to give me lessons on a schoolmaster to get my riding up to scratch in the meantime!
