so ive always had horses in work who need clipped due to sweating up during work, while standing in etc.

now i have a 2yo cob, he lives out (unless it gets really wild because im too soft to leave him out :D ) 24/7 with 3 other geldings. He has a massive thick black coat and being a cob he is chunky. he has been relatively sweaty over the last week, i did have a rug on him, no filling just to keep the rain off his back as one of the horses has actually got rainscald from how wet its been up here! he is too sweaty now to wear that so he has been out without it and still relatively sweaty if the horses have a yeeha in the field. the mud is also caking on his stomach which is a nightmare to get off and must be uncomfortable for him!

he is also being gelded next month and i know he runs a higher risk of infection if he is too hot and sweaty.

my friend has got someone out to clip her big guy tomorrow and shes offered to clip gus at a discount offer if i want him done. any suggestions on what clip to get, if at all? was thinking maybe just a bib extending under his belly a bit, then rug him when it gets chillier again? or should i just leave him be as he will need the coat when it starts snowing/freezing etc?

thanks for any advice!

Ditch the rug on a 2yo cob!!!!!! Really, you are more likely to give him skin infection from overheating.

Whilst I wouldn't be in any rush to be clipping a 2yo, if he is uncomfortable and sweaty then I wouldn't rule it out. I'd take a bib and still go nowhere near a rug.

yup i have, as i said it was mainly because one of the others contracted rain scald and i was worried hed end up with it, until we moved into the winter field they had no shelter. ive only had it on when its been really wet :) yeah a bib sounds good i think just wanted opinions as im still not used to thi sort of thing! thank you! :)

I wouldn't rug or clip either....the weather is unseasonably warm at the moment but who knows what it will be like next month.
The best coat a horse can have is it's own.

Another, don't do either - if he's a bit sweaty that's him regulating his own temperature. leave him be - proper winter will be hear before you know it!

If hair is sticking to his tummy fluff, cover it in some pig oil or similar so the mud just slides off, only in extreme circumstances can i imagine needing to clip a 2yo cob!

I had to do my 3yr old when I moved from the North down to the balmly South. He was sweating and not drying out properly so he got a rainscald like rash on his chest and neck. I had some of his tummy and neck taken off. Like a bib but a bit further back on his stomach. It meant I could treat the scabbiness and he stayed cooler.

I wouldn't rug him or clip him either. If he is unbroken and not in work he should retain the natural oils in his coat which should protect against rainscald (because he is not being groomed or bathed for work). My warmblood youngster went through his 2yo and 3yo winters without being rugged quite happily.

Thanks everyone :) I have messaged my friend and said I'll not bother getting him clipped. If in a few weeks when it's colder and he's still sweaty I'll see about getting him a wee bib clip. Thanks for the advice!

I think you made the right decision I wouldn't have clipped and definitely no rug:)

With a 2 year old I would not clip unless for health reasons.

* Sweet itch
* mites or lice
* bacterial or fungal
* injury

This is my clipping guide from the old days.

My cob always has a belly clip (apart from this year because he’s been too sweaty to do. He gets really thick mud in between his front legs as the hair gets so long so I literally do a strip down his neck and under his belly. It also stops him getting too hot but he’s never rugged unless it’s bitterly cold and wet (I’m in the South).
