I am a bit baffled here - my horse developed a cough a couple of days ago having never ever had a cough before. There is no snotty nose, he seems bright and his coat is not dull but he didn't feel 100% when I ride him - nothing major I could just tell he wasn't feeling completely himself.

He is in a huge well ventilated stable at night has soaked hay and horsehage, wet feed, dust extracted bedding on rubber mats, is turned out for all the hours that it is day light and has garlic in his feed. The cough wasn't there at all on saturday, was there when ridden sunday quite badly so I got off him - thought he may have had very mild choke, then yesterday we just went for a bumble round fields and he coughed about 4 times then last night and today it seems to be worse and he is doing it even when not ridden. He has his normal appetite and his temperature is not high. Any suggestions???

syringe some benilyn into his mouth, it soothes and relaxes the muscles in the throat so he should stop coughing...I would do this for two days and if no improvement would call the vet.

When I had same prob I called vet and this is the advice he gave me, unfortunatly it didn't get much better and she was still coughing so had to have an inhaler. Now I've still got the inhaler but only use it for emergancies
