I know all the books say to feed them after you yourself have eaten, but we eat quite late so when I get in from work Barnes gets his supper and then we go for a long walk. Its partly to do with his 'toilet' routine too!
Loki gets fed at totally differnt times to us eating...
So - in the morning - he gets breakfast - but we don't eat in the mornings... so he gets it first I guess! If we at home - we eat lunch - he doesn't...
Then he gets dinner at 6pm and we might have ours at about 8pm...
Soooo.... I understand the theory behind feeding the dog after you eat (pack status etc etc.) but in reality - if I eat lunch - then he doesn't get his meal until 6pm - I'm eating first... but also he is eating first because I don't have dinner until 8pm. But he might get s scrap of meat after I eat - if I have a bit of leftover. So what does his little doggie mind think? That he is fed first or not?
Incidentally - if i drop food on the floor by mistake, then he won't eat it until I've told him its ok. sometimes I pick it up again and don't let him have it... oooh I am mean...
I only eat dinner at 9pm most nights (such is chaotic Manhattan life) so Stella gets fed way before us--at around 6.30pm. For breakfast, however, I eat first.
As a general rule my dogs get fed after us but that is usually because my grandkids have tea as soon as the oldest comes home from school, usually by about 4pm, my dogs regular feed times are 8am and 4.30pm. Sometimes we eat later but I try to keep their feed times regular if at all possible.
Mine all get fed in the evening at the same time I feed the horses. Each of them has their own 'feeding spot' in the barn and their bowls get put down in their pecking order (they get very confused if you do it in a different order
!). Once they've finished they know not to go near anyone elses bowl until they've all finished and then they go around and lick them. They also know not to eat out of anyone elses bowl, however any food that is spilt on the ground is ok. I don't think anything of it, with 5 dogs you need to have a system and they're all happy as they know whats what. However other people who have seen feeding time are very impressed at how well behaved they are
, I think when they hear 5 dogs they imagine that feeding time must be chaos
! They only get one meal a day and usually get any scraps mixing in with their food. They get biscuits and treats during the day. They're all active outdoor dogs so I don't have to worry about their weight
are dogs are brill, they have food down all the time so they eat when there hungry, thats why there so fit and healthy coz they dont rush and there bodies dont store the food as fat!
you are supposed to let dogs eat after you so they know that you are in charge as the leader of the pack always eats first, however we feed our setter at te same time to stop her from pestering us while we eat our tea as she is just the right height to see on the table!
