I don't know if I have had a major lightbulb moment here or whether I am completely off with this thought but I will say it anyways.

Thrush in horses feet is a fungal infection yes? Which we no is commonly caused by poor/incorrect diet?

Okay my boy first started having sinusitis symptoms in March this year, in December last year I completely changed his diet.

Fast forward to September this year and he is having an operation to remove one of two infected teeth. At horspital vets shockingly find a massive fungal infection in his sinus that had even eaten away at the wall of his sinuses (hence the good draining)! Fungus is removed and drained for 10 days. Vets say fungal infection in the sinuses is very very rare and she has never seen it before, they put it down to possible poor living conditions at the yard I was at, at the time- no winter turnout, dark dusty indoor stables and possible spores in hay.

Horse comes home all well, fast forward to end of November pony goes back to hospital to review sinuses with a follow up scope. Unfortunately, they find fungus is back and has been there again a little while although no where near as bad as before. Removed and flushed again- review again in a month. Vet stumped as to why it has come back I have moved yards, stable 100% more ventilated, turned out during the day and different forage and pasture! I am confused, upset and at a loss to as to his future.

So my question do you think it could possibly even minutely have anything to do with his diet at all, what so ever? PS. he also currently has thrush in his feet!!

Anyone have any thoughts? I may well trial a new diet before his upcoming review on 21st!!:(

I wouldn't say that is a high carb diet, does he need the conditioning feed? Could you just feed grass nuts see if that helps?

He is barefoot and I have a new trimmer coming out to see him tomorrow so I am sure I can review diet with her. He does need condition- poor doer TB :( but I may still be able to change it around if needs be!

My skinny pin TB is on the ERS pellets, calm and condition, linseed and pro hoof (soon to be balance) and its worked well for her

The Pro Balance/Pro Hoof wasn't enough to kill off the persistent thrush in my horse's feet. It cleared up for the first time in three years several weeks after we changed to using the Forageplus with much higher levels of copper and zinc. It has not come back since (11 months later) - I now buy in the raw ingredients from the Pro Balance lady on eBay and make my own balancer but with beefed up copper/zinc levels. As an aside, the horse also suddenly developed a much enhanced topline, commented on by vet and physio, and we think possibly due to the Lysine in the Forageplus, so that goes into my home made concoction too ;)

Maybe worth a thought? The zinc in particular seems essential for fighting off things attacking the body including bacterial and fungal infections.

Shy has had bouts of thrush - when he comes in at night, I now spray his feet with a mix of neat tea tree oil and eucalyptus oil, every night. Once a week I put on Red Horse Field paste. No thrush this year !

The only time I ever asked the farrier to trim his frogs was to cut away the upper infection areas.
