I'm after opinions after having a chat with a friend over the issue of ponies height vs riders weight/height and thought I'd see what people on here thought.

Example 1- Pony 11hh and quite fine, rider 5'3" weighs 8st

Example 2-Pony 13hh and quite stocky, rider 5'5 weighs 12st

Question-Which if either rider is too tall and/or heavy? Or are they both fine? also would the ponies age influence your answer? would it be the same if both were 4yrs as it would be if both were 14yrs?

I would like to add this hypothetical and not based on anyone :D

Hard to really comment without seeing ponies move with and without a rider.
I am a pony squisher anyhow.
Weigh 9.5 stone, 5.3 and ride fine welsh b 13.2hh and we do jumping too.
Hes always coped well with me as its all he knows so maybe hes just developed strong muscles to cope:eek:
Anyhow he flies around with me and carries me easier than lots of 16 hh horses.
Ponies are usually so strong that people sometimes cannot appreciate it.
An older pony would probably struggle if it had had a tiny 4 stone child on all its life.
I have only ever once seen a pony severely squished and it was carrying double of 8 stone-need I say any more:eek:

couldn't say without seeing in real life :)
Mine is 13.3 welsh D built like a brick shite house and i'm 12st 7 ish
She's carries me with no trouble whatsoever, though i've had since i was 11 an probs like 9stone so she's been 'conditioned' to weight carry if you know what i mean. Even though she has no problem with my weight, i am losing 2 stone, because she has an old joint issue and starting to get stiff so could do with a lighter mummy.

I know it would be easier if you could see riders/ponies but like I said, it was a hypothetical conversation so no ponies or riders egos were harmed in the making of this thread :D I was more interested in peoples initial reactions as to what they thought :)

Assuming pony one weighs 250kg then then the 8stone rider is probably overweight. Research now shows 20% of the bodyweight of a CORRECTLY weighted animal (i.e. not under or over nourished) will mean no undue stress on joints/heart so in this case 50kg. 8 stone is 51 kg, by the time a saddle/hat/boots/clothing added the rider will weigh 60kg which will be over the reccomended weight. 11hh is also tiny. I'm 5'4 and no chance have I got or 'riding' an 11hh.

Pony 2- assuming this weighs 400kg would allow for 80kg. 12 stone is 76kg so just within boundaries but bear in mind they wont be riding naked!!

Good answer from ShadowBoy. Pony 2 would have to be VERY stocky (and healthy) for this.

Personally I'd say both riders need larger mounts.

Without any other details I'd probably be more worried about the first scenario (thinking show pony type here), I am 5'3" and under 8st and certainly wouldn't ride a pony like that.
