Another horse I dont know what to do about

OK folks, sorry but yet another dilema. In my defence I have been very very busy lately and I am trying to sort my life out a bit.

I now have a rider for stressy warmblood and everything is going well. However her rider is not a sharer so I still have all the responsibility, thats how I wanted it.

My 36 year old is obviously not part of this.

Which leaves our 21 year old cob, which hasn't really had a job since she stopped showing a few years ago. I do ride her occasionally and did a couple of shows last year, but that was more for her sake as she enjoys it.

Currently someone who shares another horse on the yard is using her for her young daughter. They ride for a couple of hours on one weekend day and a couple of times a week including getting lessons from an instructor who comes to the yard and more at school holidays. They have asked if I will take them to a few shows this year as well. They dont pay and dont do any jobs so dont count as sharers.

I am thinking of advertising for a share/loan but to be honest I love this pony to bits and dont want to loose control of her future. She owes us nothing and deserves the best.

But bottom line is that I find three to look after is hard work at weekends when I have two houses to renovate and everything else around the house.

Should I try to find a full loan on our yard, which would only leave me with two to look after. Or find a sharer who can pay their contribution by doing some jobs to make my life easier.
 
Could you get a financial contribution from one or other of their riders - or another rider - and use that to pay someone to do some yard stuff?
 
Could the child do her over the weekends/holidays and evenings that they ride , if the mother is there anyway it would be the least they could do in return for using her, if the child is not up to doing all of it they could share the jobs.
You could then try to get a sharer for the other days so she is done for you most days you may find a sharer that would do some other jobs for you rather than paying, it could be more attractive for someone with limited cash but time on their hands and would probably be more help to you.
It will be spring soon will they be out then so things get easier or do you have them in at night in summer, poo picking could then be the childs holiday job in return for riding.
 
I used to allow someone to ride my pony, the deal was they mucked out! They were also great about sometimes doing my others as they appreciated using him, it was also a case of mother who had her own using him for daughter. They later had him on full loan
 
i think you need to chat to the people using your horses! the people using the all singing all dancing 21 yr old for their daughter would be paying a lot for the uses of a safe school horse. i dont think that asking nicely for a contribution, and some jobs would be out of order. the rider of the stressy WB could still do jobs. if you fel uncomfortable asking them if they would contribute towards livery,shoes, vet,ins, .. then maybe you should tell them that as you are struggling on time and money that you are going to advertise them for share/loan and see what their reactions are!!! you are at present subsidising their expensive hobby!!!! of course they wont offer unless you ask, or change the parameters!

Thanks, I dont think that would work with the people who are riding her now, I dont think they do jobs with their current share. However I could look at suggesting this sort of arrangement in my advert. Unfortunately I do bring them in at night all year, I have to watch my oldie doesn't get too thin, cob not too fat and stressy warmblood I would worry about if she was out all night. The little cob would actually be perfect for someone older who wanted something steady to return to riding, she only needs a confident rider if you want to hack out alone, the rest of the time she is a donkey :D

That would be great, I'm not sure anyone on our yard would be interested in that, but there might be a horsey mum somewhere who would. Thank you.

I certainly would explain the situation to them and rather than lose the rides on the horse they may help more, or contribute $. If they are not willing then seek a share.

Thank you, I offered to share her with them last year but they didn't want to as they dont think she is a suitable type for their daughter, too strong a neck, not that she uses it.

Thank you. The rider of the stressy warmblood is doing me a favour, the horse needs work or it can be "quirky". She is an excellent rider and is really improving the mare after only two weeks. Actually she will help but I have usually done the jobs by the time she arrives.

As I mentioned above the other people dont want to share her, they asked me last year and I agreed but they decided she wasn't suitable. I really mentioned them to show that the pony is a saint :D If someone takes me up on an ad they will have to make other arrangements.

The first bit I understand... I've got a young student who rides out my TB as he's too green for my son (competent novice) to take out unsupervised yet... I wouldn't charge her as she rides him beautifully and is doing me a massive favour keeping him ticking over... She will mooch around and muck out/sweep down if it's not been done - but I don't expect it...

The family who are using your 'unsuitable' cob though... I guess she isn't really as unsuitable as they thought if they can use her every weekend and for lessons etc... They sound as if they're getting a bit of a free ride to be honest and I would consider that situation a share and therefore some financial contribution or care on their behalf would be completely fair... Or give someone else the opportunity...

LOL, no I dont suppose she is really 'unsuitable'

Anyway I have done it, written an add and put it on the website. I haven't specified loan, share, money or anything. I will discuss that depending who replies, if anyone :D :D

Thanks again, putting it in writing and getting other peoples thoughts really clarify things in my mind.
 
WOW, got a reply already. I dont think they will be suitable but still, I will contact them tomorrow.

I am very impressed with this site, I got a lot of replies for a rider for the stressy warmblood and now interest already in the little cob.
 
When my rugrats were starting to ride I went with a loan/share option to check their interest would last...

£20 p/w with no real expectation of yard duties and a very relaxed "nip over and see her whenever you can" approach so I'd head over about three times a week - but I did put the kids to work as I wanted them mucking out before climbing on the pony and although it was a very basic patch of ground; they had a ball there... After six months or so the pony moved to our yard on a full loan and a year later is still there and her lovely owners have one of theirs liveried there too...

Your 'unsuitable' ( :D ) little cob could be exactly the sort of thing we were looking for at the time... This might give you an indication of one option that worked out well...

agree - but if they are not likely to want to contribute for the pony then by all means advertise
