Another update, for those well-wishers over my last two posts about my horse who went down with very mild colic signs on Sunday night and ended up in surgery with a displaced colon yesterday..!
So yes, the surgery went very well itself, though they could barely keep her alive and she's not best friends with the anaesthetist who had a very hard time with her. The plan was to have a look inside and pretty much call us to see what we wanted to do. We waited three and a half hours and then heard that not only had they been in and out, she was awake
He had seen what he had to do, put the colon back where it was supposed to be, wanted to take a liver biopsy as her bloods had shown extensive liver damage, but had to close her up quickly because she was so unstable. She kept getting blood clots moving about yesterday evening, after the surgery, and she wasn't well overnight and pretty much had a nurse sat with her all night.
This morning however, she was bright and perky and the vet was very pleased with her. She went for a walk, did a little poo, a massive pee (good sign for her!!) and is mobbing everyone for food as she's so hungry after being starved for 36 hours!
We went to visit and got covered in coat grease and blood, but she was very pleased to see us. She looks horrifically poor - I can now see how poor she had got, and now have something to blame other than "she's not been in work for two months and she always drops off".
They're currently taking more blood to see how bad the liver is, as if the colic is sorted then our next task is to tackle that. She's got more wrong with her now than any horse I've ever known, but she's still perky and happy!
I'm off on holiday to the Isle of Wight in 20 minutes, so am leaving the vets and my mum to it. I was absolutely convinced we'd lose her yesterday, completely convinced, so at least I can go away a little hopeful
I've also been doing lots of reading on how to manage liver damage
I really can't wait to get her home. I know she's still on a knife edge, and will be on box rest for a while, but I'm really looking forward to tucking her up in her *ahem* field shelter!
