Another mud fever question, sorry!

Just noticed today that my lad has a small bit of mud fever on one fetlock, I've never had a problem with mudfever before and was unsure whether the scabs needed washing and picking off as it doesn't seem that this is done as much now, I've just put sudocream on it. So do I leave the scabs or not?

I always soak in warm diluted hibiscrub to get the scabs off, air dry, then if turning out cover with sudocrem. I look after a mare who had terrible mud fever and after clipping her legs I repeated this every three to four days and it was gone completely within a fortnight, touch wood it hasn't come back!
