I'm hoping to take my share horse out for some local veteran showing. I have no illusions that we'll do very well, and I'm not planning on spending much on turn-out, but it'd be nice to get out and about!

My understanding is that, for veteran, they're turned out according to type. The problem is that he doesn't particularly fit any type!

I'm leaning towards riding horse, so pulled tail and plaited mane (what there is of it) for him, with coloured browband? Tweed for me?

Am I right in thinking there's unlikely to be a ride judge at low level stuff? I wouldn't expect a ride judge to cope with his spookiness, so would prefer to go in-hand if that's a possibility.

I would go with your plan, I don't think veterans ever have ride judges as they are a mixed class, never done proper level but think this is still the case.

Ditto the others - turn him out as a hunter. He's not pretty/dainty enough to be a riding horse - and I don't mean that in a horrible way as he's LOVELY! He's a big, handsome looking chap, who would look lovely turned out as a hunter!

Thanks! I think I may have chosen a slightly deceptive photo because he does normally look a little more spindly, but he's never going to have a particularly dainty head.

I do love the big idiot, even if he has his moments of being a wet nelly!

Ah for some reason I didn't think he was that big!

He's deceptive! I blame it on his big head. *g*

Can i just say how stunning this boy is! My opinion is probably just parroting everyone else but he caught my eye. He sort of reminds me of my own hunter girl who became a veteran this year. As everyone else has said id go for turnout as a Veteran Hunter. So plaited/pulled tail, plaited mane (decent size plaits - not like a row of frozen peas as some insist... my complete pet hate on hunters), trimmed where needs be. For you the tweed, shirt/tie and velvet hat job. Plain bridle with a hunter noseband and plain browband - nothing fancy (how i look at the other classes and wish i could jazz my girl up haha). No riding judges at low level either. He looks a right chap like he is so i wouldnt interfere too much. good lucK!

Thank you! I'm not sure what they were aiming for when they bred him (Andalusian sire, Friesian/TB dam) but he came out pretty nice. (Yes, I'm biased. *g*)

Time to practise plaiting that gives an illusion of muscle on his neck...

Definitly turn out as a hunter, at 17hh and with the amount of bone he has he isnt realy riding horse material
