Oh dear I unxecpectedly dismounted yesterday and thought I'd got away with until i realised I couldn't put any wieght on my ankle. Anyway after xray I have a fractured fibula, just where it sticks out at the ancke and am now in a cast.

Apperently it isn't major as nothing has moved as long as it heals well and is a fairly common 'sports' injury.

Anyone else suffered this and did it all recover OK?

I had a similar injury a few years ago - a good pysio when you come out of plaster is important to make sure you dont end up with a slightly stiff or weak ankle.

I hope you make a speedy recovery - crutches and ice are not a good combination so no racing around - enjoy any help on offer.xx

Did this about 100 years ago (seems like that) sitting trot on my first horse would you believe wobbled of a bit of a clunk and that was that.

It was a bit stiff initially and I was frightened to wear high heels so bought loads of flat shoes. Ankle is fine never went back to heels.

Totally sympathise, snapped mine 7 weeks ago. I was impatient so had cast for 10 days, walking boot for 2 weeks then took it off (against doctor's orders) and walked carefully without boot or crutches but only on level ground. Had x-rays last week, all fixed now and can ride again (well I could if it wasn't for the snow).

Make sure the docs don't keep you in a cast for the whole 6 weeks (unless complicated fracture). Once you have an air boot you can partial or fully weight bear and you can take it off while resting so you can exercise it and get the movement back. I've got full movement in mine already and no muscle wastage.

Word of warning though, if you take boot off too soon and go over on your ankle it'll snap. I took the risk and it was worth it but I knew it was a risk.

Hope you don't get too bored. At least you've got xmas to break the 6 weeks up and you're missing the darkest mornings

Thanks for all the comments, it's good to hear it should heal fine if I'm sensible. I have a friend who freelance grooms so she is happy to look after Herbie for me for the next few weeks which is a big releif as OH has enough on his plate with me and our young daughter to look after!

Ouchies! I hope you heal well and fast!

Personally I would be a good girl and do as you are told

My friend fractured her ankle - it was very minor. She was supposed to have it in pot and keep it elevated for a mere 4 weeks. After only 2 weeks she was fully weight bearing and ridin again - with her pot on - and fell off!!!

She didn't do as she was told - and now pays the price 2 years on because of it. She now is due for an operation to cut and rewire her ligaments, has a 50/50 chance it could go either way

I learnt my lesson from her dreadful experience and I'm behaving for sure! xx

welcome to the Injured HHOers Corner.
haven't managed to do that, but fingers crossed for a quick recovery for you.
btw, i've done 3 1/2 weeks in leg brace thing (dislocated knee in unscheduled dismount from v naughty 4 yr old) and took brace off 2 days ago, my muscle wastage is unbelievable, so that's prob v good advice up there...
