I am moving horsey at the weekend to a new yard where he will be coming in at night to a stable with rubber matting I am going to the yard to clean out the stable and clean the matting and wondered what would be best to clean it with......................!!

i don't clean mine, i just sweep it clean and put new bedding on top (i hope you're going to be using some kind of bedding, if not horse and rugs will get filthy beyond belief!) and use essential oils occasionally to keep it sweet smelling.

I used to use Black disinfectant. Make sure to clean the concrete underneath too though, and the walls. Then rinse well; your horsey won't catch anything then.

I clean the concrete with Jeyes Fluid, but I believe it rots the matting. This year I used Ecofect stable disinfectant. It came in a spray form like window cleaner, then just hosed it away.

Thank you all for your advice.
Yes I am going to use some bedding as well, but wanted to make sure it was clean before my boy arrives!!

Does the stable drain well? Worth considering as it will take ages to dry out with this weather and you will be doing a lot of sweeping unless you take the mats out and wash them down outside which is very messy and won't make you popular on a new yard.

If it was me (and have moved mats to death recently) I'd make sure all the old bedding is out. Give it a really good sweep over the top then fold the mats one at a time to get any stuff out from underneath.

Finally get some disinfectant like Virkon e and put it in a plant spayer diluted. Give the whole stable a good squirt and then you will have it reasonably clean without getting it all sopping wet.

I'd disinfect the mats top and bottom sides with Virkon or similar. Same with the floors and the walls of the stable. Then sprinkle one of the stable disinfectant powders underneath the mats as a belt and braces.

Then we tend to just drag them out and do this once a year as our stables drain really well.

Ditto Virkon. It kills off just about any nasties that may be lurking. Id be wary of using jeyes fluid because it really does small vile and if you are putting the mats back down on the concrete the aroma will hang about under them for ages. you dont want to put horse of its new room!

Lift the mats, sweep the floor and use minimal amount of water worked well in with a broom. Same for the mats then just stand them up outside in the sun or a breeze for a few hours and then drop down on the floor.

You may need a hand actually moving them about.

TBH I don't clean mine. Occasionally it gets a build up of wet shavings underneath at the sides and I have to pull it up in a corner and shovel up any bulky bits that cause the mat to rise a couple of centimetres but other than that I tend to leave them down. Dad and i did pull all the mats out and scrub the floor but it is a very time consuming task and the mats are extremely heavy. Dad says in the spring he might bring the pressure washer and blast the floor and the walls too.

Ooooh, the essential oils things is so simple but sooooo clever!!!

My beasties stable stunk awhile back and I spent all day scrubbing etc, the oils would of just been the icing on the cake..........
