When you import a horse that has been registered abroad, presumably for breeding purposes you have to re-register it in the UK with the relevant breed society?
Soooo, do they take your paperwork and say "Yep, ok fine" or do they charge you a rather large amount of money, insist on seeing import documents and then insist on inspecting said horse to make sure it meets general conformation requirements? Not that I think that checking a horse isn't in fact built like a moose is a bad idea, but they do charge rather alot of money for it. The AQHA were happy with photos

The Associación Argentina de Fomento Equino is a registry for ALL horses (all breeds and types). Does this sound like a good idea? A bit simplistic?
They've just introduced a passport system for horses (does this sound familiar?) and the passport is basically the same as the 'libreta sanitaria' which is compulsory for all horses and shows all vaccinations and records AIE tests (Coggins) but enables horses to travel abroad. Oh, and I have to send it to Buenos Aires for them to stamp it then send it back, blah blah blah...
God this country is complicated!

Well I have Hanoverian, Oldenburg and KWPN horses and granted the latter two dont have breed associations in this country, but I would like to hope that the Hanoverian mares are accepted for what they have done and achieved in their home countries with their own registry. If I had to get them re-inspected etc with the "daughter society" then I think I would be rather peeved!

I dont mind sharing the paperwork etc, but to be re-inspected I would assume not.

It all depends on whether the passport complies with european standards. North America too is thinking of implementing passports along the lines of EU regs. I think the main thread of the EU is that the passport identifies the animal by description and that there are pages in the passport to record medication given for the human food chain!

Have a look on the Defra website and phone one of their vets to discuss it. If you can get a copy of the pages scanned or faxed that will probably help. It might be that some pages need to be added in which case have a phone round and see which passport issuing organisation will do this for you cheapest. Ther is a list on the website.

If that passport meets EU standards and there is no breed society you wish to overstamp it then that is it no further cost.

But make sure you speak to the vet and not the desk jockey, as I had a bad expeience with advice from one of those!

Oh and there are a couple of importers of Agentinian horses mostly criolos in the UK it might be worth asking them for advice, but they might try and sell you one!

My mare only had papers from canada so I had to get a passport made up from them but I didn't have to get anyone do her markings as it was already on the papers.

When we imported our Hann mare last year i just sent all her papers and results to the Hann GB and they added her to their database for £10

The Oldenburg mare came over a few years back and i just put her on the SHBGB basic id reg just so that she was legal in the UK and i think that was £20.
