If you need a loose ring waterford half an inch bigger, does that philosphy still apply to a full cheek waterford? Don't you need the eggbutt style rings to be the correct size on the face or does the bit still need to curl around the lips properly?

Clueless this evening...can you tell?

Waterford Mouthpiece

This bit has a chain type mouthpiece which has ‘ball shaped links’ linked together, the bit is floppy and mobile in everyway, it is completely movable in all directions. The Waterford mouthpiece has proved one of the most popular bits for bitting problems such as leaning, taking hold of the bit, setting the jaw ect, when the horse tries to lean or take hold of the bit, the waterford mouthpiece collapses, thus the horse has nothing rigid to take hold of. It encourages the horse to work of their quarters and carry themselves rather than using the bit as a ‘bike handle’ to lean on. This bit has several joints and distributes the pressure of the mouthpiece over both the tongue and bars. Also this bit may look severe, this is quite a mild bit and due to the mobility of the mouthpiece it generally suits any breed of horse and mouth confirmation. The Waterford mouth should be worn ¼” - ½” longer than any other mouthpiece as the mouthpiece needs to curl slightly around the lips to enable the bit to work to its full potential (except the Waterford Pelham – as the mouthpiece is worn the normal length).

Think I've answered my own question. Thanks anyway.

Fair enough, I understand it should be normally, but I know someone who brought hanging cheek from Neue Schule, and wasnt told to go up a size....if it works for the pelham, I dont see why it would be different for any other fixed cheek design!?

No nor me, hence why I asked the question.

I'm a bit confuddled myself as like you I knew that the pelham didn't need it but the neue schule site says that's because the bit too wide in a pelham would eliminate the curb action.

It wasn't such a blonde question I don't think eh? Mind you Neue Schule state the filet baucher exerts poll pressure and yet according to a debate in the stable yard a few days ago it was decided that it didn't exert any poll pressure.

This is why I get easily confused.

I got the Waterford snaffle last week and the seller did say that it does have to be 1/2 inch longer than horses normal bit size.So i got a 6.5 inch (normal size 6in) and it does slightly show around the corners of his lips but that it what it is suppose to do.If that makes sense.A very nice bit that my horse really took to.

I love them Rema, Patches does go very well in her Stainless Steel one but I wanted to move about from the pessoa (gag) cheeks.

I've gone for a Neue Shule one. Can't wait till it arrives.

Pickle goes nicely in one. He really seems to take to them.

I have his normal size and havent had any problems, (well once he started having a habit of trying to get the ring in his mouth but rubber biscuits sorted that

I am a waterford fan

I also have a waterford dutch gag which is brilliant for pickle he is like a changed horse hacking in that. He feels light and holdable as opposed to strong and unholdable!
