If I was to put my mare in foal what would you go for. She's reg ISH so I would really like to stick with that (sorry SSM). I like the Humerist?? Anyway to give you an idea

I love the Humerist but it depends on what you what to bred for. I wanted a showjumper so decided against him for my SJ ISH mare, instead I went for a Selle Francais.

I know of a lovely young ISH coloured stallion by Clover Hill who is turning out to be an excellent jumper / all rounder, he is in East Sussex.

What do you want to breed?

I would like a nice quality all rounder really (hunter type) My mare is a fab jumper with a great attitude, so I would like something that had a good jumping record too.

I really like the Humerist but a lot of his stock looks a little too common for me (just MHO though, from what I have seen).

What is your mare like in temp / confo/ etc? Good points and bad points would be a good place to start. My Mare has great confo and temp. but her hocks are a little bit 'irish' i.e. close, so I made sure I chose a stallion who had excellent confo behind. Also my mare is quite sharp and buzzy, especially when jumping, so I steered clear of horses that seemed a bit keen and opted for something a bit more level headed, hoping to get a happy medium!

If you start by drawing up a list of good and bad points you can then have a much better idea of what you are looking for. You are being smart by thinking now as there are so many stallions to chose from.

Also consider your budget, at least for the initial outlay / stud and keep fees etc. I wanted the best for my mare but I was restricted slightly in budget so I chose a stud that where near by to help keep costs down.

Loads of research and I'm sure you'll change your minds loads of times but once you find the right stallion I think you just know

I wondered if they would tbh. My mare is fairly laid back with a good temperment and attitude. She does dish though so I need to take that into consideration and she is also quite long.

TBH I failed to find an ISH that ticked all my boxes, which is a real shame as I would have loved to have kept her irish. But then I wanted an out and out jumper. In the end we used Alme Des Nids from gustavvi Stud (www.gustavvi.com) it might be worth you looking at some of the Selle Francais stock, I was a bit against any foriegn blood to start with but after seeing a few of them in the flesh I was blown away to be honest. They are really substantial and reminded me of the old fashioned TB's, leg in each corner type.

I have my eye on the coloured chap I mentioned earlier for next year, just waiting to see this years crop first

What size horse are you looking for height wise?

I have not seen many of his stock, but the ones that I have seen did not grab me.

I honestly think she'd produce something cracking to a more LW CB!! Failing that any modern Sportshorse - the breeds are all becoming so much more athletic, it can be difficult to say this one or that one IMO.

What do you think of Treliver Decanter? Or Goshka Ringo or Goshka Festivo? I also really rather like Major League....

Madam_Max - is this the mare you said a few weeks ago looks a bit like my Ellie? because they are remarkably similar - but with very different breeding!!

She's lovely!

She's Selle Francais X Arab! By Geraldo, an AlmeZ grandson, out of an arab mare.

How big is your girlie? Elz is 15.3.

That's interesting - my Arab stally had an Alme Z grand-daughter bred to him this year! Do you know the pedigree of the Arab dam of your mare? Or is your mare on allbreeds so I could look her up?

(Sorry - didn't mean to hi-jack the thread!

Unfortunately we dont know anything about the dam - sire had full pedigree, but her dam is listed simply as 'Lola'. We only know she was an arab because we managed to decipher the double-dutch papers! Its a shame we cant find out more; I have written several times to the breed society, but have received nothing back

Do you know which son of AlmeZ the mare was by? he had several prolific ones, Grand D'Escla was one, Galoubet probably the most famous. And of course, there was Animo too!
