another rigging q - heavyweights

Captain and Fany when they feel cold enough to need it. Caps is a cold horse so needs it at warmer temps than Fany who is a hot horse and generally only needs a medium at most.

I think it is better to suit the horse rather than the temperature.

im thinking that jerry might need his on tonight - we're expecting snow over the next few days and he's not very hairy tbh.

it's to be between 3 and 1 tonight

sorry just realised in previous post I was talking about turnout rugs and not sure whether you mean stable or t/o so....

depends on your horse a lot I think tbh. I have friends who already have their horses in heavyweight + middleweight (they are entirely clipped legs and all) and they are comfortable, but if I did that with my lot (even clipped ones - legs on) they would sweat buckets. Is he in or out at night? its easier when they are in as you dont have to take into consideration wind or rain!

stabled my non-clipped but light-coated ones wear;
10oC->8oC lightweights (100g/150g)
7oC->5oC lightweights + fleece
4oC->2oC middleweights (350g)
1oC-> -1oC middleweights + fleece
-2oC-> -4oC heavyweights (450g)
-5oC-> -7oC heavyweights + fleece
-8oC-> -10oC heavyweights + lightweights.

That system works for mine (clipped horses tend to wear snuggy jams in replace of fleeces and get swapped to the next level down when temp drops to bottom of range Eg at 5oC Id swap them into MW instead of 4oC). I like having a system as whilst I dont stick to it regimentedly it does mean Im not faffing about down they yard deliberating which rug to put on :). but like above different horses get warmer/colder quicker and also depends what your horse is used to I guess. Also depends what you call Heavyweights - I have belmont combo 350gs as MW which they call HW and will be buying some PE 450g for HW (last year I layered).

If he lives out; turnouts generally (alter if really cold strong wind etc)
11oC+ (raining windy etc) - rainsheets
10oC->8oC - rainsheets + fleece
7oC-> 5oC - lightweights (100/150g)
4oC-> 2oC - middleweights (250g)
1oC-> -1oC - middleweights + fleece
-2oC-> -4oC - heavyweights (350g->420g)
-5oC-> -7oC - heavyweights + lightweight stable rugs

:) hope that helps a little. When you know what works for him you can just turn into an organisational freak like me and put it in a chart :D problem solved :p.

hehe brilliant :D

I did say to myself that he wouldn't have his medium weight on until it was 4 degrees but he was feeling a bit cold under his lw so the medium went on.

the weathers been pretty horrific up here for the last week but his box is pretty sheltered.

ill just have to pop up after work and check he's warm enough

it is hard when the weathers gusting around you and you're freezing in the yard not to rug the horses up warmer despite them being tucked up in stables :p I always have to fight the urge and then check on them later to see they are warm enough to alleviate the worry even though I know they will be fine! Its difficult as they arent walking round in stable so shouldnt feel too warm to touch particularly if not clipped my non clipped usually feel the same temp as my hand (when your hands a comfortable temp!!) and clipped ones a bit warmer to the touch when they are the right temp under their rugs, IMO anyway cant exactly ask them! and the base of their ears is also the same temp/just slightly warmer than (a comfortable) hand temperature :). whatever hes in Im sure he will be fine with owners who worry so much to do exactly the right thing for them we surely cant be far out so they must be doing alright! ;) :D
