another rug post

this is just a moan really

what is everyone putting on there horses now its really cold?

Frankie is fully clipped (although it has grown out slightly) and he has a Mark Todd middleweight stable rug and a middleweight turnout, not a full or half neck. He has been wearing them since early November, when it was cold but not frosty, and now its gotten really cold over the last couple of weeks, Frankie's owner hasn't put any extra on. I did say to her perhaps he could do with (at least) a sheet on underneath, but she was like 'no he'll be fine'. on my lesson on Saturday my instructor even said he looked cold

because his hair was standing up!

do you agree with me? if he has been having the same rug on when it was moderately cold, now its dropped considerably shouldn't he have a bit extra? like me, I've started putting on a hat and a scarf!

or am i an 'overrugger'

I always check temperature by putting hand under rug and behind his ears, AM when i get 2 yard and hes in stable and again once he comes in from field. Then i decide what to do!!

Im an overugger, but im trying hard this winter not to, although i can get paranoid with him being a TB and having a bad winter with weight loss last year x

Ooo I'd be concerned that he would be a wee bit chilly too.

Thumper is wearing a Rambo Duo with a 400g & 100g liner in it - plus the outer shell which has a 100g fill - so that's 600grms in total. And neck cover.

He wears the same in the stable - although I have just ordered a heavyweight Premier stable rug for him.

He's also fully clipped.

he has lost weight - she has started (finally) giving him some hard feed and he had been fine for a few weeks, he just defiantly doesn't want to be losing any more.

I'm not talking about a full on duvet but perhaps a cooler/fleece type sheet? if his hair is standing up that is not a good sign!

only a couple of months and the winter will all be over

You obviously care very much for this horse. It's such a shame you can't do more for him...........

thanks amymay, i do and its very frustrating! i just have to think that one day he could be all mine to look after and he'd be a happy (warm) horse.

well no you mention it..........i suggested it last night

i was putting him away and she told me something that got on my nerves again (he is to be kept in all day today because she is away, i said i could turn him out and she said i wouldn't get there until 6am and its too dangerous to cross the road at that time. FINE, I'll come down when its light then!! Grrr) so i just though 'stuff it' and asked her what would she think about me taking Frankie with me if I was to move to Cornwall, she looked a bit surprised and said perhaps

we would obviously have to have a sit down and talk about it. Guess we'll be doing that tonight then!

I'll keep you posted!

She also said how would I afford it, i said I'm talking about in a few months where with any hope of luck I will have my inheritance through and paid off my loan and credit card - which alone is £250 a month (or thereabouts). Plus I'll be living at home so I'll have an extra £100 a month because I'll be paying less rent

But it's a big decision for here I spose so will need some persuasion tactics
