Hi wondering if you could help me. When I bought my mare four years ago, she had a flatish kind of grey scar on the inside of one of her front legs which I was told was a type of sarcoid, not to worry and leave alone. Four years on it has grown a nodule that resembles a nipple (!) - it's not ulcerated and the skin is not broken. I am getting conflicting advice of what to do a) call the vet to sort it asap b) leave alone, cover with fly repellent and see how it goes. Any other advice? Global herbs supplement/creams etc. Have heard a horror story regarding insurance company getting wind if vet involved and writing an exclusion????? Many thanks for any help, much appreciated. X

Hi there !
smile.gif

My horse has one on the inside of his hind leg (groin) I used Camrosa to get rid of one which worked but now he is allergic to the stuff. I am not doing anything with this one as it doesn't bother him at all, In the summer make sure you put plenty fly repellant on it in the summer.

I always think if it isn't broke don't fix it.

Hope this helps.

I think it's probably best to leave it alone whilst there are no noticeable changes in size or it starts bleeding/causing probs. Camrosa has worked very well for me on bleeding sarcoid in the corner of a mare's eye, and I have it on good authority that copper sulphate will also 'kill' a bleeding sarcoid.

So glad you asked this Bootz as my big lad had one appear on his belly few inches from girth area
frown.gif
just over a month ago. It now resembles a nipple that looks like it has been suckled ie flatish in shape. It has not grown very much at all and at first looked like a small wart type growth popping out through his skin like the skin had inverted.
I have kept an eye on it and applied some tea tree oil and sudocrem to see what happens basically as I am against surgery as the prognosis is not good if indeed it is one, as I believe they can grow back and not just in the same place.
Was going to do a post on it myself but as long as you don't mind can I hijack some of the advice you get about yours rather than posting a separate post on basically the same subject.
Papafrita I have heard about camrosa and also some cream called thuja? cream that is supposed to be good for sarcoids. What is the success rate for both?
Only concerned about it ( although small) due to its location being near girth and where you would apply leg as well as the possibility of infection due to flies.
Here it is
posssarcoid2_edited.jpg

Bootz does yours look anything like the above?
Can anyone confirm that it is a sarcoid? I know it may be hard from the picture as not that clear, but has anyone had them start in the way and size. Its size is small as you can see compared to my thumb and fingers.

Hi Cazee - Sorry to hear you are having the same dilema as me!! Ok, my girls is grey in colour but very full looking and definitely nipple like! Not ulcerated and no bleeding. I hear this is the time of year they are likely to pop up. People I have spoken to have suggested global herbs products for sarcoids but apparently the supplement stinks and I know she won't eat it if it does! My instructor confirmed it was a sarcoid and suggested stockholme tar on it in the summer to stop the flys. I too have heard about thuja but unsure of success rate.

Thanks for your replies everyone - please keep them coming for Cazee and I!! X

Cazzee, if yours is grey in colour, are you sure its not a tick?

As for Thuja, I have had great success with it. It can be obtained from your local health food shop, but they may have to order the potency in - 30c pot, either cream or jel. Apply daily. If you need any more info, pm me.

The insurance companies will exclude you from making further claims for sarcoids once you have made a claim. My horse has had 2 sarcoids removed. I have seen horses treated with the Liverpool cream/or caustic creams however I'm personally not sure if it's always successfull- I would always opt for having a sarcoid removed as soon as I've noticed it- I suppose it's personal choice, and depends on where the sarcoid is located and of course, whether or not you are covered by insurance!.

Yes a grey horse, sorry to say this but they do seem more prone to them and melanomas so I believe as well. My lad the one that has it is the clydesdale cross and is a bay dun in colour. Apparently they can also appear where there has been an injury/blemish. So far as I know he has never had any girth galls or bites there etc. But I only had him in September last year so have no idea if he had a blemish in the past. He does have some white hairs near his withers ( very low btw and flat backed) which would suggest he has maybe had a problem with saddle in the past, perhaps a rub. However it would not explain where the sarcoid? is as it is a bit further back than the girth area but I do tend to have mine quite close to his elbows due to his barrel belly lol.
Perhaps his girth has been further back in the past and has rubbed I just don't know?
I have heard of global herbs but not for sarcoids although I may not have read those articles. Basically I just looked online and in any books I have and have been searching through equine magazines for hints and tips. Have that many mags though lol taking ages.
Stockholm tar is very good but very sticky. If you have not used it before and you buy the carr and day martin sort I think it is? In an orange tin. When you open don't make my mistake and chuck away the metal clips off the lid. I didn't see anything about keeping them but the bloody stuff was like that ectoplasm in ghostbusters or the black thing in the lake in Creepshow 2 and it bubbled up and I lost most of the tin grr.
Saved what I could and put tin inside a sealed plastic tub as well. Be warned it is very, very sticky. Don't use a brush like I did ( as bought it originally to put on my lads hooves when unshod and had some chips etc). Use a spatula/blunt knife or blunt scraper to apply.
Once on the skin it is hard to get off. I put some on Mcfly's leg the cob in pics, around a cut on his leg last year. Didn't put on the cut just around to keep flies off and it seemed to work as it does stink like a very strong pine cross road tar smell.
Will look into that supplement though as sarcoids are meant to be caused by a virus if I remember? and boosting the immune system for them to fight themselves would be good.
Doug's doesn't seem ulcerated but there is a little bit of blood occasionally at the base. Not very much but it does look like the kind of sarcoid that will bleed if knocked which is why due to the area it is a pain.
Sorry about long post lol. Right must go and clean ferrets out .....

Exactly what I was going to say!

You could always try painting 'it' with nail varnish remover; if it's not a tick it won't hurt it and if it is a tick it will shrivell it up. Whatever you do, do not pull it out as you might leave the head in which will cause infection. You can also get tick removers from the vet/pet shop.

Hiya MFH ( Pat?) and Llwyncwn yes I am sure it is not a tick as it started like a wart and is def skin. I have seen ticks on other animals so luckily know what they are like and the damage they can cause like Lyme's disease isn't it?
Thanks for the suggestion though and about the nail varnish remover as have not heard of that before. They usually say smother in vaseline or similar or put on some frontline. The latter are not always necessarily available but in a house with a daughter who is growing up nail varnish remover most certainly is lol.
Llwyncwn I will pm you about the thuja as it does sound a good cream and I have read some success stories about it myself.
Thanks for advice

My mare's sarcoid started out like yours, but eventually (and actually quite quickly) started to get sore and started bleeding (never seemed to stop) Vet recommended removal, but mare was in foal at the time so anaesthetic/sedative not a good idea. I asked if I should give Camrosa a go and vet was VERY sceptical but said it wouldn't do any harm and only costs about 25 pounds compared to a vet call out, so I gave it a shot. It certainly didn't work straight away (think several months!), but when it DID start to work the effect was noticeable.
Apparently copper sulphate works much more quickly but it DOES make a horse sore (got some on a cut once... dammit but it stings!!) and I'm not sure it would work UNLESS there was bleeding/rawness as it's not supposed to affect healthy tissue (say my books!) Not that sarcoid tissue is actually healthy, but it's not bleeding...
A few people on HHO gave positive testimonials regarding copper sulphate on sarcoids. Perhaps you could start another thread?

I have found that it is best to remove sarcoids when they appear, if you get them early enough freezing removes them. The liverpool cream is excellent as i have had it used on three sarcoids did not leave a mark but it is expensive. Ringing them works or having them cut off by the vet is an option, the only problem with these two options is that you dont always get all the cells and the sarcoid will re-seed. Horses that get sarcoids tend to have them their whole life as even after successful removal they will re-appear sometimes in the same site or on different sites. In my experience supplements do not appear to make any difference it just goes in one end and out the other. Tried Comarosa and that did not work either but some people have had success with this cream. The other option is to leave it and if it does not get bigger you will be ok, but in my humble experience the nodule type appear to grow. Sarcoids are a real pain in the neck for horse owners and any farmasutical company that comes up with an injection or some such cure will make a fortune.

Am using Blood Root ointment on a newly formed sarcoid at the moment, on day 4 and am impressed. It now seems to have broken down into "individual" warts instead of one big sarcoid cluster, and still isnt sore or angry looking. It can take upto 30 days apparently, but Vet says he has had a 100% succes rate, and causes only a minute amount of scarring. Fingers crossed will be gone within the next week never to return!

Lol and I don't mean that in a horrible way btw I mean lol at there being so many different kinds of treatments for them and it's knowing which one is the best to use. tbh I'm a tad confused as to which option to go for? I don't think it is big enough to have a band put around as I presume they use a device which is the same as the one they use to put around sheep's tails and to castrate etc.
I remember someone selling one on ebay last year and very nearly bought it. If I had though it would still be too big to use I would imagine as his growth is still very tiny really.
The good thing is that it does not appear to be growing very much which does please me to some degree as I doubt very much it is a cancerous growth. I'm sure that I read somewhere that some sarcoids can indeed be cancerous in nature. My own experience with tumours/growths that have been like that in pets is that they have been aggressive and have grown very quickly except in the case of an elderly ferret I had that died and she had suffered with cancer for over a year but was still going strong until the last two weeks when she slowed down. In that case she had a lump in her neck ( in lymph nodes) and she also had an outward growth on her paw that I presume was cancer related. Both were slow growing but she was elderly. Dougal is 16 now and so I have no idea if the same applies in horses that growths or cancer are slow to develop? Of that I am not sure.
Just a quick question hope you don't mind me asking but what age did people's horses develop these sarcoids?
Papafrita that does sound interesting about the copper sulphate but I'm unsure about using anything on him yet as technically he is not my horse ( loaned). I just want to get as much advice as I can before I have a word with his owner and see what they think. I know I am responsible for him now and that includes veterinary care but as sarcoids are such damned awful things that could reappear if not dealt with properly and even then there is a risk. I am unsure about starting any form of treatment without discussing it with the owner and that is why I want to try and see the pros and cons of all the available options.
Ok so you can ask a vet etc but in all honesty I find the best information you can receive is from owners and handlers who have experienced it first hand and have seen both results successful and those that failed.
That was why I was asking in relation to the size and appearance of the sarcoid? which I am positive it is tbh. If people have had experience of a similar size and nature and how they treated it and what worked for them.
I'm also a believer in nipping things in the bud so to speak as well but obviously need to know if this size is treatable yet? and also the best course of action to take.
Sorry if I seem like I am waffling it has been a long day so forgive me .....
Cazx btw thanks for the responses so far Bootz and I are very grateful

I've put my boy on Global Herbs' SarcEx about a month ago and it has made a huge difference to his sarcoids already. He has a huge one on the inside of his thigh which has shrunk to half the size; all the others have changed from black to pale grey, shrunk and look very dry, as if they are going to drop off. One very prominent one on his flank is definitely "lifting" and looks like it will drop off any day soon!

He's eating the SarcEx fine as long as I mix it in well, but then he's not a particularly fussy eater.

Yes, thanks for replies everyone, very interesting and loads to go on. Nickym can I ask if the SarcEx is very strong smelling? Have emailed Global Herbs for more info on it but no reply. The blood root and thuja cream sound good too. Cheers again.

My grey mare has got sarcoids, they first started to appear last year, when she was 3 and after consultation with the vet I decided to leave the Liverpool cream for a while and try the herbal root first. I have had her on Hilton Herbs Equimmune and Thuja tablets and I can't really say that they've made them any better, but they don't seem to have got any worse; although in the last month I have noticed a couple of new ones sprouting up! - I have also tried Bloodroot with little success, I applied it following the instructions but nothing happened! I am now giving Hilton Ditton cream a try, if this doesn't work then I'm going down the Liverpool route! - and I have to say, although no miracles so far, out of all the lotions and potions I've tried it is the only one that has made a difference, not a huge one but I've only been using it for about 8 weeks and there is definatley a change so fingers crossed! Sorry it's a long post!

Well....my Appaloosa filly started with a flat greyish (dark grey) lump at about 4 months old. When we got the vet out for her first jab l had him look at it. to cut a long story short- she had to go in at 5 1/2 months before weaning to have it cut out! The biopsy showed that it was a rare type of skin cancer. This was removed and she had rather a lot of stiches!
Before the op.......
2006_1113Image0004.jpg

after the op.....
2006_1118Image0041.jpg

Now at 11months ol..it has returned! At first l thought that it was a sarcoid- but the vet said he was almost 100% certain it was the cancer back- so has just done a biospy- he was right. Although this time it has grown OUTWARDS.like a nipple......
our3appies013.jpg
.but with a red head on it.
She is off back in to have it removed- but this time it has shown that its benign..so at least theres one in her favour!
Sorry to put this and maybe worry you- but before lotions & potions....please get it checked out first! I hope for you it is only a sarcoid.wish hers was.
