Do they usually get worse before they get better? Started off with a flat lump and since applying cream it's looking a bit red and angry! I spoke to vet who isn't too bothered and will check in 10 days when due for injections but I'm a worrier and can't wait that long!

Any advice really appreciated x
 
There really aren't any hard and fast 'rules' with sarcoids unfortunately, they are funny old things.

What cream are you using? The liverpool cytotoxic sarcoid cream generally does cause skin irritation but I'm not so sure about other treatments. You could always give your vet a ring if you are concerned.
 
It's right next to his eye so vet and I spoke about using sarc ex, he explained that the Liverpool cream is really strong and I've got friends who have used this with great results. I'm using the cream and the feed supplement, the vet is keeping a eye on us but I just worry that I maybe havent made the right decision?

There really isn't a right or wrong decision with sarcoids a lot of the time, as they are so very different. I don't know much about the Global herbs stuff, and they refuse to list their ingredients :rolleyes: but for something to have an effect on the cells of a sarcoid (which is a form of benign tumour) they will also have to effect 'healthy' cells - the same way that chemotherapy kills off cancer cells but also other cell types - hence hair loss/degradation of gut lining etc. You can't really target just the affected cells unfortunately.

Trust your instincts, and your vet's opinion, but for now I wouldn't be too worried about a reaction such as this x
 
We used the Liverpool cream on a horse over Xmas who had a sarcoid starting on the side of her mouth. It was about the size of a very small pea and the cream was put on once a day for two weeks. It did look quite sore for a few days but has now totally cleared up. YO put it on with a cotton wool bud so it only went on the actual spot rather than unaffected skin.
 
do you mean the Hilton/Global Herbs Sarc Ex cream?

If so, I used that on my horse and it made it spread from a one inch area which had been that size for a year to a 5 inch area in 4 weeks.

Hoping it won't have the same effect on yours if that is the same cream

Best cream I've come across is Sarc-Off which you can only buy from the vet - really works on my horse and he's VERY difficult to treat.
 
Every horse is different but all cases I've heard of with sarc ex including my own have been successful, just give it time, it takes a few weeks to get on the system and really do its job
 
most sarcoids within the eye region are injected with bcg vaccine. works well. no i wouldnt self medicate a sarcoid esp in the eye area. could you ask your vet for a referral to liverpool to see Prof Knottenbelt. he is very good and explains everything, and n9t as expensive as you would imagine! good luck sarcoids are not the end of the world. but need to be treated properly before they get out of hand.
 
I have just had some large sarcoids removed from one of my ponies. The removed sarcoid was sliced up, immersed in liquid nitrogen to kill the virus and then implanted into the horses crest so the horses immune system will fight the virus that causes them. The vet that did it has done 40 of these with a good success rate (70%)

I should know if it has worked on my mare in 6 - 8 weeks

Has anyone else had this done?
