Another thing I did not know

We have these - we had a bout of cracked hooves with no obvious cause so farrier suggested them. They certainly worked.

Am currently having a bit of a love affair with copper as after trying everything for an eternal thrush-y frog which would *almost* go, but never properly do the decent thing and naff off, copper sulphate has finally sent it on its way. It has also dyed his sole blue though, so he looks like he's trampled a smurf.
 
bonus - high iron in the diet (common in the UK) can reduce dietary copper absorption. Copper is vital for good hoof/coat growth. If your horse's coat tends to look faded, this is probably a copper deficiency (also, very common in chestnut horses, as they typically need more).
