Former Crufts winner Margaret Greaves banned for life after keeping 30 animals in appalling conditions.
Light sentence again, 12 weeks suspended . About time sentencing was reviewed in animal cruelty cases.
Vile woman

Was she still active on the circuit? Did no one notice that she, the dogs or her vehicle were stinking? Sadly you can tell a lot about how the dogs are kept at home by the way they are presented at competitions IMO.
Although somebody obviously shopped her, thankfully.
Even if the worst cases are left at home...that smell gets into everything.

just looked at all of the photos and cannot believe that someone would keep animals like that.....lets hope they all get good homes with a better quality of life,,,,at least she has been banned from keeping dogs for life and i hope whoever shopped her will keep watch in case she gets any others....she should have had at least 6 months in a tiny cell!!!!!!!

This is just awful :( The sentence isn't enough IMO. Those poor dogs!

A lot of people will look at the dogs at crufts and think they're cared for like royalty... sadly not always :(

Poor things - that is horrific, and far too light a sentence, the justice sysytem is a joke. There is no way on earth I could defend a person like this if I were a solicitor, I'd have told her to bog off....I can only hope these poor dogs find the loving homes they deserve. That BIATCH didn't want them as they had outlived their usefulness, nasty, nasty cow.

Haven't looked at the pictures (can't bare to atm) but this kind of thing is what makes me unsure about all the advice to buy puppies from registered breeders etc as though they are automatically better than family bred animals, someone with a well-loved bitch having a single litter before spaying etc.

I'm pretty sure she wasn't a registered breeder, just produced pups from her various dogs . I think people see the headline Crufts and immediately think of show dogs . This woman competed at Crufts as part of a flyball team , her dogs were quite possibly not even purebred .

Ah I didn't think they looked like a show dog breeder, I also wouldn't think that you could take any of these dogs out and have people think they were treated like royalty and this be the reality for them at home. Of course that doesn't stop people having two sets of animals, the ones they do and the ones they don't bother with like the Arab breeders/hoarders Rachel and her mother.

It goes across all disciplines and I am pleased to say that I have witnessed judges publicly calling exhibitors and handlers out for their dogs bring smelly, over/underweight or not groomed, in show and sporting events. Needs to be said more often.

I've had a whiff of some dogs and wonder what the hell their living conditions must be like :(

I've watched crufts lots of times and have attended in the past and I've never seen a dog I thought look scruffy or uncared for. The flyball and agility dogs all look in very good condition and looking at them you wouldn't think they went back to a home like this :(

Maybe it's like ester has said, the dogs doing the jobs look good and the others.... she said in the article that she had 'no use for them' maybe that says it all.

I'm not saying this sort of behaviour is widespread, I'm talking five or six comments at different events with different breeds over the same period of years...still too many of course. But more people in authority should speak up on the condition of animals generally IMO.

You said this so much more tactfully than I was going to MM :) being at Crufts does not signify a 'top dog' person in any way..,,

I'm definitely not disagreeing with anyone. I was just expressing my own views as having watched crufts I've (probably naively now) never thought of the dogs competing there, whether show or otherwise, living in bad conditions or people not caring for them as they should. And it surprises me that well thought of people in that 'world', can get away with something like this.

I hope the dogs get the care they deserve now.

Edited as: I guess technically she hasn't really got away with it now

Ah, sorry, in avoiding the upsetting pictures I missed that info too.

What a bitch! I am glad she has been banned from keeping dogs for life (although I believe that should have been a ban on keeping ANY type of animal) and I do think she should have had a prison sentence for the scale and level of neglect and cruelty shown to all these dogs. She looked to have a variety of breeds including collies and lurchers.

I think the advice should be to research thoroughly no matter what type of breeder or place you buy a pup from.

Yes, I agree about the Crufts thing, and its done to wind people up.

Just because they competed at Crufts doesn't make them good at handling, owning or looking after a dog. It's just a dog show. But the fact that people want to tar anyone who associates with a dog show with evil breeding practices gets my goat just a bit.
