Another tot killed by dogs

I've never intentionally set out to leave a baby of mine with our dog. I certainly wouldn't go and have a bath, tend to the garden, do the ironing, make tea etc with the dog and baby in the same room. It's a no no. Generally I didn't even have to ask the dog to move, he follows me about as it is.

However, there has been the odd second or two when I've gone to answer the door or the phone etc (it's a cordless phone and if it's not on it's cradle, I've nipped into the kitchen to fetch it before walking back into the living room) and the dog has either not been with me anyway or wandered back away from me into the room the baby was sleeping in.

Most of us will have a dog in the same room as our young babies if we are there, but that still doesn't safeguard them from attack. I've been in a room (not in my house I hasten to add) when two dogs have turned on each other and it happened so quickly there was nothing you could've done to stop the attack. Therefore surely the could still happen with your own dog and a child, even if you are "watching" them.

If I had a big breed, boisterous dog, I have a distinct feeling it wouldn't be allowed in any room where I had the baby at all. I realise small dogs can cause injuries, but a big dog would make me feel more uneasy.....but then again, I've never fancied owning a big dog anyway.

As for other dogs......I must admit, I always shut MY dog in the kitchen if people with babies come to visit. It just seems to be the done thing, much as I wouldn't want my baby left in a house with someone's dog. As you say, it rarely seems to happen in the child's own home, which is clearly the deciding factor in many of these tragedies.

Well the story goes:

- the parents went out on the town and left baby with granny

Which is what makes this worse - Jaden spent the first few months of his life in hospital so once home the parents probably wanted a well deserved night out together after spending every night in a hospital. Just makes the whole thing more tragic.

I don't actually know the grandmother.....

That is so tragic. Poor little mite.

When are people going to learn that any animal has a bad day and can react out of character at any time. I was absolutely gutted to read yet again a baby had been savaged by dogs, it really really upset me.
