Don't know what sort of trailer I shall be buying yet, so no idea on weights, my boy will be 16hh MW/HW cob... so all a bit pie in the sky, we have full licence for towing as we are well old lol

Anything screams out to recommend for our family car that will tow a decent weight, will be our only car to two and fro stables, go away for weekends/holidays, and tow the beast really needs to be as econimical as possible!!

I quite like the Sorentos, anything else jumps out to people?? Won't have much more than 4k to spend

Be a bit wary of Sorrentos at that price point. There is a known problem with drive shafts failing. We bought one and had to return it under warranty (thank goodness we bought from a dealer!) as £5k worth of car needed about the same amount spending on it again to get it safe and road worthy! Had the drive shaft failed whilst in use it would have written off the car and potentially caused a serious accident.

There are threads on the owners club forum about this.

We decided to spend a bit more and get something else so we now have a nissan with part time 4wd so it is more fuel efficient, and as it is a commercial vehicle the tax is cheaper too.

I think unless you really do your homework old 4x4s can be a minefield. Read up on common faults with the models you like the look of, buy from a dealer that offers a warranty and then get any niggles checked quickly whilst it is still under warranty.
