Big 4 year old TB in foal mare. (First foal). In paddock with 4 others. All have rugs on. This mare has broken her hind leg strap on the near side, and the off side she has somehow got the leg strap still done up but not around her leg! The rug was 'almost bib like'.
Thing is, she is a grumpy so and so, and has a lethal cow kick. Usually with her, there must be two of us to rug and 'do' her. The one at the head holds a front leg up and then back leg straps / fillet string / tail trim and whatever else can be done safely. I'm on my own til Thursday and in sole charge of all the horses.
I've thought about catching her in, and rug sorting in a stable where I can tie her, put my hat on and convert remaining leg strap to a fillet string. She isn't great to lead away from her friends, but it isn't far and with a bribe of a bucket I'm sure will be fine. BUT, I've got to get her through the gate without any of the others, and from experience of her field friends that is much easier said then done. The gate swings open into the field, and I can't risk letting it go for a second for fear of the others barging out (onto the lane).
For now, I've straightened the rug - and lived! But of course I'm not happy.
