Hi
My youngster damaged the extensor tendons on both hind legs last week, the vet said it looks like hes been having whoolies round the field, stopped quickly and jarred his tendons. He told me to rub some tensilvet on to them, (its a antinflamatory gel) and that they should go down with in 72 hours.
The tendons looked really bad, i did as he said and they have almost gone back to normal a week later, but the legs still seem to be a little on the thick side still, just down the front of the leg.
The vets coming out tomorow to check him over again, but im really getting worried that they wont go down completly.
Has anyone come across this before that can put my mind at rest, that knows if they will eventually go back to normal.
Thanks

Hi My pony damaged his tendon in his fore leg - its still very think and hard 3 years later, I think it depends on how bad the damage is, in my case he couldnt be ridden again and his fetlock was dropped to the floor and box rest for nearly a year. Have you had a scan to see what the damage is?

Not sure why your vet hasn't scanned the tendons to assess the damage? I agree with HorseNPony about a scan! The ultrasound machine is portable so as long as you have electric or even a generator you will be able to scan!

Luckily for me I took my horse to the spa when he did his deep digital flexor in 2003 and his tendon is fine! But then the spa treatment is second to none.

He then did both front suspensories in 2005 hooning around the paddock in boots I may add! Again took him to the spa and paid a whole load of money this time but I was riding within 6 weeks and never looked back since!

Our vets Rossdales love the spa and have seen some very good results from it!

Tensolvet is ok for very minor injuries.

Thanks for your replys, i will mention him being scanned to the vet today. Although he siad it wasnt bad and he wasnt worried, maybe im over reacting again as usual.
But its better to be safe than sorry

No real point scanning horses immediately after the injury - the worst of the swelling needs to have gone down for it to work - the damage doesn't show up for some technical reason my OH explained and I've forgotten. Think a week or so on is about right but not sure...
