Dont know whether to try this on my youngster who is getting cast but i am worried he might still try and roll with it on or dont knkw whether to minimise his bed and put on rubber matting and views on this?

If you do use an anti-cast remember to put a breast girth on it to prevent the risk of it slipping back and turning into a bucking strap.

It is also worth while using a good quality one and use good padding underneath it because if it is not done up well enough it will not prevent the horse getting right over and will just slip.

I hate anti cast rollers - unless they are done up tightly they just slip around and done tight enough not to can cause sore backs.

Just get some lengths of hard wood and secure them around the walls of the stable at about 2'6" and 3'6" high so if he rolls he can get a hoof under the wood and push himself off.

Horses can still get cast in anti cast rollers!! If they do the roller itself can do damage, I have seen the results myself
Better to use the anti cast strips that you can fix to the walls

I've used one every day for a number of years on my TB who had a habit of getting cast both at night and during the day often within 5mins of coming in. I tried anti cast strips which didn't help and also massive banks. Since using the anti cast roller she hasn't got cast at all but has managed to properly damage the roller so it had to be replaced. I put a very thick pad underneath it and haven't had any problems with it slipping back. I'm really pleased with it but still have rubber mats and a very deep bed and banks just in case. One of the grooms at my previous yard did turn her out in it and she managed to roll over completely with it on before I got to her again twisting it but luckily she didn't cause any damage to her back. Having had several situations where she did a lot of damage to herself getting cast and thrashing about to the point she needs sedating to get ropes on I definitely prefer the anti cast roller.

He never rolls when turned out always seems to be when he gets fresh bale of shavings which is why i thought it he had less bed might be less inviting
