My boy has now been prescribed long term usage of phenergran to allieviate his head shaking by our vet. It has worked wonders but I am concerned as to whether there is any long term detrimental effect to the horse in taking these tablets.

Does anyone else use these or other anti - histamines at all? It also says that they may humans drowsy. Is that the same for horses and are they illegal for any competition ?

I've used cetirizine on my mare for yrs, daily. (She has acute COPD and SPACOPD) With no side effects. I dont know about drowsyness and phenergran, but cetrizine has never made my girl drowsy even on 50 tabs a day, she even did a 15 mile ride on full dosage, and trotted back to the lorry : )

Sorry, my mistake - its actually Zirtek (Cetirizine Hydrochloride) not Piriton/Piriteze. I just buy it in bulk from my vet very cheaply as Cetirizine Hydrochloride.
