My horse suffers from allergies mainly in the summer but at the moment is yawning alot and is coughing when he starts to exercise. Has anyone tried anti histamines?? I know the yawning is not down to liver disease. He is on cardboard bedding, haylage, ventilate and aloe vera. Do not want to put on steriods.

Have given my dogs on occasion a human anti-histamine, but I would imagine with the weight of a horse you'd be getting through a pack a day!

We use chlorpheniramine (piriton) on one of ours through the summer. He is a 13.2hh square cob. He gets 3-4 tabs a day, as recommended by my Vet.

Hi, i have an 11h exmoor x that has chronic allergies all yr round. Despite living out 24/7 and being fed haylage, she still has breathing difficulties.
She started off having an elevated pulse and was panting when she was breathing, we controlled that by using a steroid inhaler and a ventolin inhaler, which worked ok but i didnt want her on steroids long term so my vet suggested using chlorphenamine tablets (piriton) while weaning her off the steroid inhaler and i can honestly say she was so much better for about 3 months! unfortunately shes started wheezing again so my vets coming out this wk to discuss what else we can do for her!
She get 28 tablets per day split in to two in her feeds, i had managed to drop it right down to 14 per day but ive since had to increase it again. I would definitely give them a try, the only side effect holly had was that she would get drowsy about an hour after having them but shes fine with them now.
I was buying mine off my vet but i found this site http://www.hayfeverdirect.co.uk/index.php?route=common/home
which sells them at half the price i was paying.
Good luck....i hope they work for your horse.

My horse suffers with urticaria in the winter (hives / nettlerash). He has had blood tests & skin biopsies. The blood tests illustrated issues with a number of common allergens. We eliminated them & he still kept breaking out. Naturally I don't like steroids, and they were useless anyway due to the fact that at soon as we withdrew them, the rash came back. I hassled the vet a number of times to try anti-histamines, and was repeatedly told that they would not work. It was only at the end of a years treatment that they let me try them & they did work.

I now have him on a pretty high dosage of piriton when the rash presents. I get 500 tablets for £10 on line. They work for him. If I don't give them, he is covered in large hives all over. When I give them, they significantly reduce to a couple of small pimples here & there - barely noticeable.

Worth a go in my opinion. I withdraw them / reduce the dosage as he improves.

Thanks everyone.

I wonder if the pollen or whatever irritates them are early this year. I know people that suffer with hayfever can start this early.

Anyone tried Anti Hist which is American???

I haven't tried it, only for fact that I can't get it from a uk based seller and to ship it over here was Gona cost silly money. If u find some over here can you let me know please?

I give them to my gelding, from early spring to late autumn. I use Loratadine (clarityn) he has 8 tablets a day as my vet recommended up to one tablet per 50kg. Without them he is almost unrideable, he certainly couldnt cope with the workload I want out of him. I just need to find somewher echeaper to buy the Loratadine as I am not that keen to move him onto Piriton in case it makes him drowsy, he is hard enough to get going as it is!

My mare reacted summer of 07,08 and 09 and was on Periactin,v cheap even from the vets, she did have 15 in each feed though so adds up a little. Did seem to prevent her mysterious lumps appearing on her,she seemed to outgrow it though, last summer i tried her without them and none appeared. She still head shakes though but that's also not as bad so hoping this summer she will be even better with that also.

my vet doesn't think they work, but i do so i still use them!

my horse has Cetrizine Hydrochloride - but i have just found Chemist Direct will only sell me 3 packets at a time now, where they used to sell me 9, apparently some new regulation??? If anyone buys online in bulk anywhere i would be pleased to know where so i can get round this problem, thanks.

Hi had my boy on Atrarax supplied from the vets for years. He was always itchy, worse in the summer. My vet said like trying to find a needle in a haystack to find out what he was allergic to. He was on approximately 10 tablets per day (he was bad!!) and they certainly helped. He was pretty uncomfortable and grouchy without them. Hope this helps

I have spoken to myvet re coughing and he is now on Danilon to see if this reduces the inflammation. This does seem to have helped. He is a strange one as when galloping around field bucking no cough at all, walk up the road with me on him he coughs!!!!
