Hi, Following vet's advice looking at giving either Piriton or Citirizine (supposedly non drowsy version of piriton) to my girl who has reacted badly to loads of horse fly bites. My question is has anyone had any adverse reactions to either of these and how long did you use them for. I know you need a high dosage so where is the best place to get them.

Thanks

I've has to use them quite often this summer (if you can call it that) for many and various weird reactions. The cheapest are the own brands from either Boots, Asda or Tescos. I fed 7 per 250kgs of body weight as advised by my vet. No adverse reactions to note but my vet has had to give a steroid injection and anti inflamatories once for a really extreme reaction to fly bites. Poor horsey was covered from head to foot and had been wearing a fly rug and spray.

If u search online you can get bottle of 500 piriton for approx £10,my mare had 8 daily last year with no side effects although she did seem a bit sleepy sometimes!

Hi,
My horse had numerous lumps over him - looked like fly bites. I asked my vet about them who said that anti-histamines dont work that well in horses. I have just tried immuno gold ( hilton herbs) - and after ten days , the lumps have gone . Might be worth a try. I did try anti -H but they didnt work ( 4 tabs per day ) .

I think its like everying else, what works for some doesnt always for others.
I have used them with great effect and tailored and lowered the dose to be effictive, i get the results on 4 tabs, but have used up to 8 for my horses weight
