Hi,

Does anyone have experience with hair loss due to rugs? Do anti rub vests/hoods actually work? Looking at a masta one for Milly. Her shoulders are a bit bald and her mane has thinned out a bit

So, do they work?

I had a standard anti rub (not sure what make possibly shires) and it was soft material but still rubbed !! got one recommended on here bossys bibs - its silky material and he has been wearing it for about 3 weeks and there is definate iimprovement !!

Bossy Bibs all the way. Lots better than the other ones. You can get them direct online if your local tack shop doesn't stock them

I've had a few different ones and found one of the quilted ones to be the best in terms of actually preventing rubbing and also in terms of lasting (had it 3 or 4 years now!) and in terms of staying in place (never had to go hunting round the field for it!) Not sure on the make of mine (possibly weatherbeeta?) but I think there's a few that are similar

Another vote for Bossy's Bibs . . . we went through several makes and none worked until we bought a BB - very definite iimprovement.

just watch out if use bossy bib - make sure you have leg straps on rug not fillet string. I found my rug on floor of field shelter still done up at front and underneath - bib was so slippery that without leg straps it must have slipped over head haha. Bossy bib also easy to wash and dries v easily

Tried all sorts but Bossy's are the best! Am also using a 'comfy cape' this year which looks the same but much cheaper & that seems fine so far. I had to use hoods last year for medical reason & mane got rubbed so avoiding using a hood if possible this year.

Definitely bossy's bibs. I use mine all year round on my fell, under normal rugs in the winter and under his fly rug in the summer. :)

I have a Masta lycra one for my youngster who's rubbed her shoulders a bit bare and is working well. She has managed to rip part of it already, even though she's only had it just over two weeks.

Just be careful if there is a seam on the bony part of the wither - I've had to chuck mine because the seam rubbed the wither area on one of mine and it developed a horrible infected abcess thing under the mane....

Felt awful - although he gets looked over regularly I am too small to see the top of his wither from the ground [he's 17.2] so it was only when i got on last weekend i saw it...

Rugs have rubbed my poor little arab horse on his shoulders. I used a snuggy hood bib and and elasticated surcingle to keep the rug from rubbing.

Thanks everyone! I'm looking at bossy bibs and comfi capes now. They look identical, same material etc. I like that the comfi capes are made to measure and they're cheaper!
