Mo is our 17h tb, we got him with a bad wither, he was on loan to someone at the yard already and they used their own saddle instead of the one the woman supplied, he ended up with a badly rubbed wither and now has a white patch.

Anyway he ended up with a rubbed patch again and we found out that it was his rug, so i got one of those anti rub vests and it healed again.

Hes rode in a wintec 2000 saddle and i have the measuring guiding as to what gullet to use. Hes currently on the medium/wide. I noticed the other day when grooming him that his wither is rubbing again and i have put it down to his saddle as i remeasured him and it shows he needs a smaller gullet.

YOs gf is friends with the girl that rides Mo from time to time, when i arrived at the yard today my friend asked to ride Mo and i said no cause he seems to be sore at the withers and i wanted it to heal and change the gullet before hes rode again. She accepted this but YOs gf started getting ratty as she wanted my friend to head a hack with her. She started saying it was the rug rubbing and hes still ok to be rode as i use an ordinary saddlecloth and one of those half saddlecloths that are bulky (sorry cant remember the name, i blame it on my pregnancy lol). So she said no way could the saddle be rubbing him.

So can a rug still rub even though i have a vest on. He wears a masta stable rug. She says i should put a high neck rug on him as it wont rub the withers then

Id rather have all your opinions than hers.

Its a shires lycra vest, YOs gf said to try putting a numnah below the vest to give that bit more protection.

Ive been using the vest now for about a month and theres been no rubs until now. I would put my money on the saddle as if you try it on with just a thin saddlecloth and have someone on him, its sitting right down on his withers.

Im not risking him until i find out whats causing it. My friend did act off with me but if thats the way she wants to be then she can find another horse to ride. I said to her that um going to lunge him until his back is healed.

Its a masta rug that he wears, i have heard they rub. The rugs i have for him are 6ft6. Hes not clipped but i dont want to leave him without a rug at night.

the anti rub vest can rub a lot on their withers. my horse only wears it every other day, and a show pony at the yard wore an anti rub vest and it rubbed his withers raw...

it may be a case of getting rid of the vest and changing the rug so that it does not slip?
