Anti-weaving grill?

Just wondered what everyone's experience with these are? My recently bought (6months ago) gelding it a bad weaver in the morning. Never does it in the evening anymore but unsure if he'll start again when the lighter evenings come around again.
I'm worried if I spend money on them and he just weaves behind them instead, as I've heard of cases like this before. He's getting older (17) and I worry about him doing something to harm himself in the long run. Are they actually helpful? Do they help stop the weaving? I'm unsure if I should get them or not to be honest.
 
A mare on my yard has one and she just weaves behind the grill and launches herself at it every now and then :( The only thing it's 'helped' with is stopping her rubbing her chest raw on the door. My TB mare weaves a little bit when she's worried about the others being out in the field when she's in, but not often. I don't use a grill and just groom her/ leave the door open with just the barge board over until she settles. (Obviously wouldn't just leave the door open if I wasn't there!) Is there no way of addressing the stress that is making him weave?
 
If you stop them weaving they will find another - possibly more destructive - way to express stress. But we do use anti weave grills to prevent the horse pushing on the door to a destructive extent or attempting to climb out.

He stresses because he wants to be the first one out, he doesn't like seeing other horse going out without him. I don't turn him out in the morning because of my schedule so my YO does it for me and he is always the first one out but still stresses before that even though all the other horses are in. There's no yards around me that offer 24/7 turnout or I would have gone there. At the moment we're trying calmers to see if they help.
 
I had a shocking weaver TB and nothing stopped him. A grille just made him weave and box walk, at great speed, which i think would have caused more issues because he was likely to slip when he was spinning about.
 
If he's 17 then the chances are he's been doing this a good few years, I don't think trying to block him will do any good and will likely stress him more.

Do everything you can to remove the cause of the stress, other than that I'd leave be
