Antibacterial hoof disinfectant

I had a new farrier out to my horse today, as old one has moved away, he found a few problems, such as wrong size shoes(!) and the cracks on the front of his hoof (vertical from about half way down) which I was always assured were nothing to worry about when I showed concern are infected and apparently smell pretty bad (I wasn't there when he came so the YO told me)

I have been advised to get some antibacterial disinfectant to give them a good scrub out.

So my question is has anyone else had such problem with infection and how did you clear it up?
What product did you use?

Hi,

I would use a hibiscrub dilution on it, i used to clean out my last horse's feet with it as he has really deep feet. I know using a hydrogen peroxide dilution works well on thrush also.

Depending on the cracks, it might be worthwhile using a barrier cream/tar. Hope this helps!

Yes I got antibac from the vets (dont need prescription just say farrier said it was needed if asked). Cracks caused seedy toe/foot rot usually take up to a year of regular (daily) treatment with antibac before its completley cleared as the hoof has to grow out. Thats according to my farrier anyway!

ETS DONT use barrier cream or tar/ hoof oil - the bacteria is anerobic (breeds when no oxygen is present) so you want as much air as possible to get to the infected area so it doesnt spread

You should be able to get it online. V effective! I wouldn't use anything 'sealing' like hoof grease or tar on it as unless you can be 100% sure that you have every tiny bit of grime and all the bugs out then you are just sealing them in an anerobic environment - nasty and def to be avoided!
