Mine has had 6 courses of antibiotics (noradine) as well as 2 injections of stronger stuff (cant remember name) over the last 6 months. Is this a bit excessive??
Depends what they are for, and if it is the same thing over and over.
Personally would question the vet, if it doesnt work the first time then try something else. After that the resistance will always be a little stronger.
This does sound excessive but it depends on why they are being administered. You need to know the reasons fom the vet and tell him you are worried. This amount of antibiotics can lead to resistance to use in the future and may leave your horse with a weakened immune system and gut. Definately talk to the vet!
Thanku all for replies! He is now on a course of Pro-Biozyme, and also Blue Chip pro, to give him a boost. Antibiotics were for an abscess, which l8r was found out 2 be non-bacterial anyway, and a skin infection on one leg (like mud fever really!)
I would say that Noradine is probably not working as effectively as it could by now. Its a broad based antibiotic and if you've had to use at least 30 sachets of it in 6 months then I would talk to the vet about possible other options.
Unless of course the Noradine is actually clearing up the individual problem each time and none of them are directly related to eachother?
