Rain scald question again.

The old girl I rescued from ditch has deteriorated badly in the past 2 weeks. Owner refusing to call vet as just had large rescue bill from vet and livery yard owner saying it has to hit rock bottom before it will get better.

I said if she was mine I'd call vet to which livery yard owner told me I am a vets dream and a total mug. This poor mares entire hind quaters are covered and this has happened in past week or so. Massive bald patches and huge deep scabs that are not easy to remove. Livery yard owner been picking away but mare getting sore and worried about being handled now. She is a very fine tb and extremely sensitive.

I am on good terms with vet as he is my normal vet and he would like to see mare again but owner refusing as doesn't want another bill. Vet has said he will supply me with cream for application but livery yard owner won't apply it as she thinks I am a fool - which she says in a load voice in front of entire yard!!

Owners vet suggested antibiotics and msm cream but again hasn't seen the mare yet and isn't book to do so.

The mare in my opinion is suffering. When I was helping and doing yard duties before kids hols she was gaining well and looking brighter. She hasn't gained at all these past 2 weeks and to me is getting stressy and worried again.

I am so frustrated and don't know where to turn. Owner is afraid of bills and being bossed around by yard owner who says just leave it and it will take months and get worse etc before better. To me it should be looked at and dealt with asap with whatever treatment necessary which is probably special cream that I recall is about £30.

I have offered to go back to doing yard duties and handling free of charge just so I can help this poor mare but not heard back from owner yet. I have my 3 at home so luckily don't have to watch the daily suffering or it would drive me insane :(

Advice appreciate.

YO does not sound very helpful and possibly not doing their best for the mare, she should not be going backwards now the weather is warming up and its making most horses feel brighter.
Is it where the horse is usually kept or is yours kept at the yard because I think I would be looking to move elsewhere with that attitude to caring for a sick horse, if it needs treatment it is not her job to refuse to do it.
My vet will give me , well sell me, antibiotics without seeing the horse for simple things like mudfever so it would be worth asking, they are not too expensive compared with the call out charges otherwise required and he has seen her recently so knows the score.
In her situation she will be struggling to fight off any infection as she is weak and her immune system is probably struggling to cope.

Just read again and see that yours are not there so it will be more difficult to do anything to help, possibly see if there is anywhere else the owner could move her to that may be more co operative with her care. I take it you cannot have her at your yard.

I am on good terms with vet as he is my normal vet and he would like to see mare again but owner refusing as doesn't want another bill.

I'd be inclined to speak with the vet and tell him exactly what you've told us. Chances are he'll rock up to the yard for a peak at the horse (because he was 'passing'). At which point he can give the owner some advice on what to do. And if they refuse he can get immediate action take by the RSPCA.

Anitbiotics are only going to work if its infected and nasty

The skill will all flake off and to be honest hibiscrub is your best friend in this situation

If you think she needs some help you could try vetericyn which is non-sting, and an interesting delivered of anti viral and fungal. However is quite expensive!

Now spoken to my vet who was the chap who helped rescue the dear girl so knows situation and has seen her post rescue too.

He will make me up some liquid parrafin and penecillin mix to put on her but she needs washing with Hibi scrub to soften and allow the scabs to be removed first. YO claims to know best and therefore won't follow vets instructions :( She also makes me very unwelcome on the yard and can be rather intimidating and rude so I am warey of going down and treating the mare myself.

If I had a yard and stables I'd put the old girl up here but my place is work in progress and we only have a corral and open field shelter which my 3 inhabit at night and too small to take a strange horse to them.

She could go back to her original field but the ditches all need fencing before that can happen and with owner at uni it won't happen in a hurry.

Pants situation feeling useless. Owner has asked me to treat her as my own and give her lots of TLC and YO a rotweiller who wants do do things her way and has muscled right in and controlling mares every move.

It's an nasty situation for you but it's not your horse if the YO and owner don't want to do as you want there is little if you can do .
I think a BHS welfare officer would handle this very well but although they would not tell owner it was you that reported it it would not be difficult for the owner to work it out.

There have been a few people who have offered to call RSPCA about this mare in the past but I was sure it could be sorted with a gentle approach as owner young and willing to learn.

Unfortunately he is intimidated by YO and feeling rather unstuck but also limited by funds as a student.
